Jo Dee Messina’s Evangelical Cult

discussion

Hey everyone, I just got back from the Jo Dee Messina concert in at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and I need to talk about what happened…

The first half of the concert was what you'd expect - classic hits, great energy, the crowd was loving it.

But halfway through, things took a surreal turn. Suddenly, the concert vibe shifted completely. Jo Dee started leading what felt like an evangelical religious cult ceremony. It wasn't just a few prayers; this went full-on into what I can only describe as a religious cult-like experience. Several fans started sobbing, convulsing, speaking in tongues, and the whole atmosphere felt like we were part of a massive evangelical gathering rather than a country concert.

It was definitely not what I (and I assume many others) signed up for when we bought tickets. The crowd had mixed reactions, some joined in, while others, like me, felt really uncomfortable and didn't really know how to react.

Has anyone else experienced something like this at a Jo Dee concert? This was a first for me and quite frankly, WAY too intense. Would love to hear your thoughts...

Looks like she's been transitioning to more faith-based music. From Wikipedia:

Messina has been performing new self-penned songs "Will You Love Me" and "Masquerade" at shows since 2015.[17] While Messina anticipated that they would be a part of a new EP, entitled Masquerade, she has since reassessed the direction of her music and is continuing to write new material, mostly faith-based in an effort to share God's word, for an eventual project.[18]

In April 2018, Messina appeared on Huckabee on Trinity Broadcasting Network, to debut her new song, written by Messina with producer Seth Mosley, "Bigger Than This".[19] The song caught the attention of the country music and Christian music industries, giving Messina the opportunity to bring new tracks to existing fans, while also introducing herself into an entirely new space.[20] To follow up her faith-based, original song, Messina released her own version of Cory Asbury's award-winning "Reckless Love" to country and Christian radio.[21]

Totally fine with some Christian lyrics or whatever but this was a straight up sermon and she claimed to have been “visited by god” on her front porch, etc

Better than Him coming in the back door.

Take my angry upvote 😉

Mary was a virgin if you don’t count anal.

No messiahs today

What about Jo Dee Messiah?

Hope she does a song about Ezekiel 23 20:

There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.

u/daskapitalyo avatar

We never talked about that one in Sunday School!

My Sunday school actually did lol. My youth pastor at the time rather enjoyed focusing on the more …interesting passages.

Dude couldn’t just stick with John 3:16 lmao

Boy oh boy, she has "seen the light and the Dolla Dolla Bill Y'all" there is so much money in using the Jesus word to rip people off... Almost like it is a grift... Lolz

She's gotta go where the money is. Can't get played on pop radio? Go country. Can't get played on country radio? Go gospel. That's the order of things.

Idk, have you ever spent an August in South Carolina? Hell sounds like it would be a relief on some days.

I was there too- It was bonkers… she went from heads Carolina right into full on Christ worship. People were crying and convulsing and I just wanted to hear Bye Bye. Went on for about 15 min with a full church choir… we paid for a country music concert not a Christian recruitment event and want our money back. Not ok, very uncomfortable. Wtf.

That sucks. One thing I always do before buying tickets is to check the last year of setlists. You never know if an artist will be having a midlife crisis, only playing the new record, or something like this.

u/cerfboard avatar

100%… we checked! No mention of Jesus! We were sitting there and she was telling a story about her teenage sons and she said “as a mother the most important thing I want to teach my kids is…” and i thought she was going to say something funny but she continued “…is to have a relationship with Christ.” And it was all downhill from there.

Jesus christ that sounds awful 🤣

I saw Diamond Rio and they said they could only do like half their songs in due to time restrictions, so they did a mash up medley of the other hits to save time. Then they did a bunch of gospel songs they somehow had time for.

u/askingxalice avatar

I just wondered what she was up to the other day - this is disappointing.

u/wineandpopsicles25 avatar

Same - Heads Carolina is one of my top 5 country songs, but the evangelical stuff creeps me out

u/SuperMix6 avatar

Why?  Christ is king, you should find him and read the gospel.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

u/wineandpopsicles25 avatar

Please keep your faith to yourself, I’m not interested in joining your cult, and I won’t give you money, off you go ✌🏻

If he told you to jump off a bridge…

u/TechnoMagi avatar

No

u/ZahidInNorCal avatar

Eh, he'll find me if he wants to. "In the meantime, keep your profile low" is the Warren Zevon advice I'm going to take.

Oh so by all means attempt to force feed your cult to unsuspecting fans? You and your ilk are why people are turning away from religion in droves and you will never learn. If you truly believe God is love then you would not have to use sneaky tactics to push your agenda.

Imagine being on shrooms and this shit happen, be a wild fucking trip

u/chippythecold avatar

We need to fear these people. Or start openly worshiping the Dark Lord in more public places to even it out. One of the two.

u/pistepounder avatar

Honestly open to either option 😂

Well there was that Satanic Temple display in the Iowa State Capitol building that was destroyed by a guy who felt the need to "act for god". While I agree it should be more open to other religions, that seems to be hard to do at present.

More replies

Fear is what drives them into these cults to begin with. Fear is not the answer.

u/chippythecold avatar

Dark Lord. Heard.

It’s more stupidity than fear, or just a desire to grift. Most of them don’t actually fear anything it’s just hate

There's definitely a fear of eternal damnation driving their continued lunacy. It can be all of the above, but fear is a big factor that keeps people religious.

I agree!

Luckily, there are quite a few satanic metal bands out there, but I think the vast majority of them just use it for imagery and don't actually worship the Dark Lord, except for the weirdos.

Both.

u/chippythecold avatar

Also a very viable option.

Gross

she got really deep down the faith well during her cancer battle.

I absolutely love her voice but I am in no way interested in a faith based direction from her at all and probably would not go see her live because of the weirdness at her shows

That being said her new album that's coming out this summer is just a standard mainstream country record under her new record deal with RCA

the first single "Just To Be Loved" is out at radio and all streaming services now and the album will also include "Will You Love Me" from her abandoned rock EP from 2016

both songs are fantastic.

I got online tickets to the show and watched, it was a great concert until it took a turn with the Christianity stuff.

I didn't realize she'd had cancer but oof... That was a little too Jesus saves for me.

I met her a couple times back in the 90s when she was at her peak. Great singer, super nice and fun to be around (we gave her a Furby, if that tells you how long ago it was), but it looks like she's fallen off from those days.

And it wasn't too many years afterwards when I went to a Wynonna show where it seemed more like a revival at some points, but that was just the music (good lord Wy has a helluva voice) and not breaking things down and turning it into an actual church service.

I get that Jo Dee has had some struggles since her days in the spotlight, but...yeah. This seems weird.

u/RunninRebel7O2 avatar

😆 🤣 😂

Sounds a lot like the last Cannibal Corpse concert I hit up. Way too intense.

So they had an evangelical revival at a Cannibal Corpse concert? Moshing for Jesus?

I saw them 20 years ago and the opener was Lamb of God, so they've been on that shit for a while now

Well, not exactly—but it was the same overall intensely spiritual thing.

We have tickets to see her in October and I really hope she doesn't pull this. We saw her a year ago at the same venue and the place was packed and it was a good show. I can't imagine how the crowd will react if something like this happens.

Gospel music is a huge moneymaker.

u/Musicizagift avatar

Good that you felt uncomfortable. That ain't no Christianity with tongues and wailing and convulsing. The spirit brings peace and control among other thangs.

u/I-hit-stuff avatar

Awww this stinks. I really liked her stuff

u/the_shiney avatar

Maybe she's just tapping into a new demographic.

u/Medical_Bother_5254 avatar

I was also at the show. Your thoughts are the same as mine. I sat there looking around to see if anyone else thought this was way too much. I did not see convulsing or speaking in tongues. But plenty of people on their feet with hands in the air and lots of “amen” and “yes”.  Plenty of artists will mention their faith or sing a spiritual song but this was different. This was long and way too much.  To be fair, her voice sounds fantastic and she played the songs we wanted to hear. I just don’t think half the auditorium was comfortable with the “we all need Jesus” portion of the evening.

Wtfff I've been listening to music from my childhood in the past couple of weeks and just rediscovered how great she was. Bring on the rain is incredible. Id be extremely uncomfy lol

man she’s one of the few country artists i really like. also i thought she was a lesbian?? how does that square with her faith

u/emmathyst avatar

She’s not a lesbian. She’s married to a man and her Wiki only mentions relationships with men. Are you thinking of Tracy Chapman or Brandi Carlile?

chely wright!! that was my b jo dee

Did you loudly boo and counter-demonstrate? Because that was the only course of action. Staying silent or simply leaving helps nobody. If you had started an opposition, you’d have seen you weren’t alone before you left those crazy cultists.

u/pistepounder avatar

I loudly said “what the f**k is this” repeatedly and stayed til the end of the show 😂

I don't know, I think half the audience leaving could make a point nicely.

Nah, they’d say that it was still the largest crowd ever and that the msm and/or satan and/or globalists are colluding to make it seem like they aren’t REAL AMERICANS etc etc etc
