Markus Brueckner is Professor in the Research School of Economics of the Australian National University. Previous appointments include a Professorship at the University of Queensland during 2014-2015; an appointment as Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore during 2011-2014; and senior lecturer at the University of Adelaide during 2010-2011.

Markus's main teaching and research interests are in the field of economic growth and development. He has published widely in leading international journals and regularly acts as a referee in the peer review process of these journals. His research has been featured in widely-read newspapers and magazines such as Bloomberg, Financial Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Economist.

Markus has been engaged in numerous consulting projects for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He has acted as an external consultant to the International Monetary Fund on the topic "National Income and its Distribution". To the World Bank he has acted as an external consultant on the topics "Beyond Commodities: The Growth Challenge of Latin America and the Caribbean"; "Drivers of Growth in Russia"; "The Commodity Price Super Cycle and Growth in Brazil";  and "Does Ownership Matter?  State Owned and Controlled Mining Companies in Minerals Based Economies".

Recent invitations to speak at policy conferences include the Bank of Korea - International Monetary Fund's conference on "Asia: Challenges of Stability and Growth"; the International Monetary Fund's conference on "Institutions for Fiscal Credibility – Fiscal Policy Rules and Fiscal Councils: Experience and Prospects in the Asia-Pacific Region"; and the Bank of Spain - World Bank's conference on "The Economic Challenges Associated with Rising (and Falling) Inequality".
