Album Of The Day | Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson – Winter In America

The fifth album by the inimitable Gil Scott-Heron and the first to be co-billed with his musical counterpart Brian Jackson. 'Winter In America' is a formidable album which in many ways requires no words to describe. Gil's racial proclamations are in full force in this record dealing with African American society during the 1970s although this time executed with a quietness that accompanies Jackson's arrangements perfectly. The album features the original version of the classic track 'The Bottle' as well as more delicate tunes such as 'Peace Go With You, Brother' and 'A Very Precious Time'. A classic album that...

Kamasi Washington – Fearless Movement | Album Of The Day

We are super excited to announce that the new Kamasi Washington album is now in stock. Kamasi's 5th studio album 'Fearless Movement' partly inspired by the recent arrival of his daiughter is his most concise of all his albums. Whilst there are still strong elements of the expansive orchestral elements that have become characteristic of Kamasi's sound this record takes on a more grounded approach with the focus more on smaller ensembles and guest contributors, with the album featuring appearances from Andre 3000, George Clinton, Thundercat, Dwight Trible, just to name a few. To celebrate the release of this record...

Album Of The Day | José James – 1978

José James releases his twelfth Album ‘1978’ (his birth year) and it is one of his most soulful to date. It has a very mellow soul sound reminiscent of the year and period it is named after. ‘Let’s Get It’ has very hypnotic groove with nice percussion and a four piece string section. ‘Saturday Night (Need You Know) ‘ subtly has a little more tempo without being an out and out dancer. Xenia Franca co-wrote and sings on the folky soul ‘Place Of Worship’ . ’38th & Chicago’ is possibly the albums highlight with a lilting groove and superb percussion...
