I cannot tell you how badly I wanted to love this. The intro and ending are unbelievably good but boy is everything in between kinda rough. Sure it looks good, sure Tom Hardy is amazing, sure it has some interesting scenes, but for a movie that creates such an interesting atmosphere, it really does nothing with it. He's batshit crazy from beginning to end, which makes for a fun performance for Tom Hardy but allows for 0 progression. At a certain point it just feels like I'm watching this same guy doing the same shit. Maybe that's the point? Regardless, it’s honestly sort of impressive at this point that NWR made this as boring as it was.
Believe me, this film can just be Tom Hardy speaking to the camera for two hours, and not a single soul will complain. The man is abso-fucking-lutely incredible, of course, part of it is thanks to Refn's superb direction. In Bronson, Hardy had put everything he has into playing the most violent prisoner in Britain, from being drugged out of his mind, drooling all over his mouth to brawling with prison guards, butt naked and covered in butter. If Hardy wasn't already such a well known actor, I'd have thought they went talent scouting in a mental asylum and hired the most dangerous patient to star in this. He laughed, yelled, screamed, and made that Ju-on clicking noise with his throat. Even Michael Peterson himself had described his performance as "absolute madness at it's very best."
If you think you know what kind of actor Tom Hardy is without watching Bronson, you might want to think again.

Refn is a maverick. His approach to storytelling exists somewhere out of the box. Had this story of Britain's most famous prisoner been told by a more mainstream director it would probably have disappeared into the realms of mediocrity.
And Refn and Hardy understand that that is a place Bronson does not want to be.
What I loved most I think is that for a film based on real events and a real person it all doesn't feel real. Refn's approach to present this larger than life tale in exactly that way works perfectly. This isn't a serious character study or an examination of the effects of prison…

One chaotic bizarre fun ride that’s dominated by the wild and phenomenal show stealing performance of Tom Hardy. To realize that it’s a biographical drama, makes it all the more insane. The movie doesn’t try to explore the character nor judge the system, but just tries to visually transcribe the maniacal yet sympathetic real life character on to the screen in a stylish manner. Though it lacks a proper plot and gets repetitive, it’s still ends up a pretty damn good watch just for Hardy’s mind blowing performance.
