See it on cmt on tv a few times and forgot all about it until recently when Toby Keith had died and I started listening to all his music and found a song that he sung from this movie. Hätte ich den doch einigermaßen verheerenden Kritiken geglaubt, hätte ich einen Film verpasst, der die eine oder andere Schwäche, aber darüber hinaus eine große Menge magischer Momente hat. Das spricht schon mal dagegen, Kritiken zu lesen anstatt sich selbst eine Meinung zu bilden.

Der Inhalt: Angela Delton hat vor sechzehn Jahren, als sie siebzehn und schwanger war, die heimatliche Kleinstadt in Tennessee verlassen, ging nach Miami und wurde TV-Journalistin. Bo Price, der Vater ihres Kindes, hat die Stadt Richtung Nashville verlassen, wurde ein Country-Star, ist aber schon lange auf dem absteigenden Ast und beschäftigt sich intensiver mit dem Konsum von Whiskey als mit seiner Musik. Dixie ist die gemeinsame Tochter, mittlerweile sechzehn, musikalisch wie ihr Vater, in Opposition zu ihrer Mutter und in Schwierigkeiten, weil sie beim Biertrinken in der Schule erwischt wurde. Als die Brüder von Angela und Bo bei einem Armeeunfall ums Leben kommen, treffen sich alle im heimatlichen Tennessee: für Angela ist es nach 16 Jahren die erste Begegnung mit dem Vater ihres Kindes, aber auch die erste Wiederbegegnung mit ihrem eigenen Vater und damit auch die Konfrontation, vor der sie vor sechzehn Jahren davongelaufen ist. Für Dixie ist es die erste Begegnung mit Vater und Großeltern, aber auch ein Kulturschock. Für Bo Price ist es mehr oder weniger ein Alptraum, weil ihn erstmal alle allein für die ganze Misere verantwortlich machen (das ist ja auch ziemlich praktisch) und er keine Ahnung hat, wie er den Erwartungen seiner Familie, seiner alten Kumpels und, nicht zu vergessen, seiner Tochter gerecht werden soll...

Und was missfällt den Kritikern daran?
- Toby Keiths schauspielerische Qualitäten bzw. der Mangel an so was? Richtig daran ist, daß er bei zwei Dritteln seiner Auftritte aussieht, als wolle er am liebsten an jedem anderen Ort auf diesem Planeten sein als dort, wo er steht und als rechne er jede Sekunde damit, daß ihm jemand sagt, er solle Land gewinnen. Ja, und? Er spielt einen Menschen, der fast bis zur Minute des Abspanns an jedem anderen Ort auf diesem Planeten lieber wäre als dort, wo er steht und jede Sekunde damit rechnen darf, daß ihm jemand ziemlich deutlich sagt, er solle Land gewinnen. So schlecht zieht er sich gar nicht aus der Affäre.
- Nervige Schleichwerbung für eine Automarke namens Ford? Die entbehrlichste Szene im Film ist tatsächlich die wenig handlungsfördernde Fahrt mit einem Ford durch ein Schlammloch. Das lässt sich aber verschmerzen. Ein zwanghaftes Bedürfnis, sich nach Betrachten des Films einen Ford zu kaufen, hat sich bei mir jedenfalls nicht eingestellt.
- Eine Überdosis Patriotismus amerikanischer Prägung? Trotz der beachtlichen Fähigkeiten der Kameraführung, diese so zu platzieren, daß das RotWeißBlaue auch noch im Bild Platz hat, ist es eher so, daß der Film den Überschwang etwas zu bremsen versucht. Die militärische Übung, bei der der Unfall geschieht, sieht zwar ziemlich echt aus, ansonsten geht das Drehbuch mit dem Thema "Militär" so um, daß es auch für einen Mitteleuropäer nicht schon beim Zuschauen peinlich ist .

Und was kann einen nun wirklich an dem Film stören?
- die deutsche Synchronisation, die manche Giftigkeiten des Originals völlig unnötig plattwalzt.
- Die entbehrliche und tatsächlich wenig handlungsfördernde Fahrt mit einem Ford durch ein Schlammloch, s.o.

Und weswegen lohnt sich das Anschauen trotzdem?
- wegen Burt Reynolds. Der kann nämlich um einiges mehr als beim Lkw-um-die-Wette-Fahren gewinnen.
- wegen eines Soundtracks, der sich überwiegend überhaupt nicht nach dem anhört, was Toby Keith normalerweise so abliefert.
- Und wegen der Geschichte als solcher, die es wert ist, erzählt worden zu sein.
