"to happen to be/do" is used when you're talking about good luck, coincidences and unplanned situations.
A: I can't reach the top shelf.
B: Well, I happen to be tall (= you're lucky, because I am tall and you need a tall person). I'll get it for you.
We went to the movies, and I left my wallet at home, but you happened to have $20 in your jacket pocket. (= you didn't plan to bring money, but it was a happy accident that you had some)
Joe happens to be a professional trumpet player, so he was able to play with the band. (= it ended up being a good thing that Joe plays trumpet)
Are you hungry? We happen to be going to the supermarket right now. (= we weren't planning to buy food for you, but we can do it)
It's used in the negative with questions, when you're hoping something is true.
You don't happen to know where my car keys are, do you? (= I hope you have my car keys)
I think I'm having a heart attack. Your friend doesn't happen to be a doctor, does he? (= I hope he's a doctor)
I lost my phone cable. The store down the street doesn't happen to sell new cables, does it? (= I hope the store sells them)
