Western cupo e piuttosto cruento, con una discreta tensione e soprattutto un'ottima interpretazione di Dakota Fanning. La divisione in quattro atti, con linea temporale distorta è sinceramente un po' cervellotica e poco scorrevole; soprattutto nel momento del cambio si fatica a stare al passo e i primi minuti di ogni parte risultano piuttosto difficoltosi da digerire. Sicuramente la sceneggiatura è piuttosto originale sia nei personaggi che nella trama e trova un buon equilibrio seppure non si è mai veramente appassionati dalla storia, piuttosto ci si limita a guardarla con un discreto interesse per i suoi sviluppi.

Ein Film der meiner Meinung nach die Gewalt gegen Frauen und ihre Stellung in der Gesellschaft der damaligen Zeit widerspiegelt. Nur durch diese Art der Darstellung können wir als Zuschauer den Schmerz und ständigen Demütigungen begreifen die am Ende zum Suizid führen. Ein mitreißender und bewegender Thriller.

Caught this on TV. Full of relentless, distasteful, unredeeming horror. The writing rivals anything the Marquis de Sade ever came up with. Oh, and how exactly does the villain survive his throat being cut, only to come back in the end and commit more atrocities, then as he's being immolated, calmly say the worst part about hell isn't the flames, but being denied love. Get real! AND get human.

I kept thinking it would have something worthwhile since I like the actors, but it was just gratuitously violent. The usual revenge movie goes: someone does something horrendous at the beginning, then the rest of the movie would be the hero going after revenge. This movie was almost entirely one horrible thing after another, scenes of pain and victimhood, including lingering scenes with children, with just a very short revenge sequence near the end before a depressing finale. Execrable and not worth tolerating the unpleasantness.
