"It might be literally impossible to name a single musical artist who hasn't been influenced by Brian Eno in the modern age. It might even be impossible to have not have heard a single bit of his work if you're somebody living in the Western world above the age of 20, thanks to composing such iconic themes as the Windows 95 startup. His work as a producer, engineer and writer is so prolific, having been a contributing part to the legacy of giants and legends even outside of the music industry like David Bowie, Genesis, Blur, Talking Heads, U2 and Coldplay, and many smaller artists who are well recognised within, like Robert Fripp, Slowdive, Bauhaus, Nico, John Cale, Sinéad O'Connor, Frou Frou, James, Devo... it goes on and on and on. This is to say nothing of his work as a direct band member or collaborator within Roxy Music, 801, Harmonia or Passengers. Or, of course, his solo work. The man to come up with the label ambient music, some of his contributions to the genre are absolutely dropdead gorgeous, transcendent tracks that will never leave you when you first hear them. The entirety of Apollo is etched into my mind, and given the theme of the album, indeed, like a mental Golden Record. In short: Brian Eno might be one of the top 5 most important people to the modern music landscape. It's almost unimaginable what a world without his contributions to the industry would sound like, thanks to how many artists he's influenced over his 50 years of work, but I feel it would be a much poorer one."

RECOMMENDED ALBUM: ANOTHER GREEN WORLD

"Brian Eno is, to put it simply, one of the most important act ever existed in the history of contemporary music. Not only he drove Roxy Music's glam swing into distorted, futuristic supernovas with his extraordinary production (just check out "Virgina Plain" collapsed synth break and try to think it was 1972), he then proceeded to have a solo career in the 70's that would just scream "revolution" without even yelling once.

His glam records - if we can still say that we're looking at glam realms by that point - explored absurd, minimalistic shades of modular repetitions or turned themselves into nursery rhyme madness sung by a sardonic, distant robot barely covered by a human veil (something that would reveal to be fundamental for many new wave and post-punk singers in the following years, probably even more influential than some Lou Reed or David Bowie gimmicks). Then 1975 happened. Eno released "Another green world", presenting ambient music to the world, changing everything that ever was and that ever would be. Without those suspended, pulsing, echoing landscapes of sounds, tons of genres and artists would have never even existed in the form we nowadays know (post-rock and noise are the two biggest names that came to my mind, but that's an underestatement to say the least).

Then 1977 came, and it was even more glorious. While he was producing Talking Heads, Ultravox and Bowie's new wave breaktrhough ("Heroes" is 50% his creation, with that majestic, swirling synth highlighting David's mesmerizing, theatrical crescendo), Eno decided to record "Before and after science", the perfect sum-up of his musical journey: while side A beats frantically covered in urban neurosis and tribal bongos - acting as a luxurious springboard not only for new wave itself, but also for african contaminations to explode into western musical scene - side B takes his ambient ideas from two years before and turns them into soothing silk threads for some of the most touching ballads pop music has ever heard. If that wasn't enough, in the following years he produced or collaborated on LPs such as "Q: are we not men? A: we are Devo!", "Fear of music", "Remain in light", "The Joshua tree", "Achtung baby", "Souvlaki", "Viva la vida or death and all his friends". And he did all that while keeping such a sobriety about himself and his body of work that many, nowadays, still ignore his massive, massive contribution - now that's a role model more people should follow when it comes to fame and how to handle it!
