      Braveheart

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Distractingly violent and historically dodgy, Mel Gibson's Braveheart justifies its epic length by delivering enough sweeping action, drama, and romance to match its ambition.

Ben D Even if it isn't factually accurate - it is an absolute masterpiece - beautiful acting, incredible Cinematography, amazing plot & Music. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Cork B Really well made film. Back in the day I probably would have given it 3.5 stars, but compared to the the schlock that is modern filmmaking, this thing is a masterpiece. I mean, ok, it is a standard action hero with supporting buddy type film - like the Patriot - a lot of it is predictable, and apparently this plays fast and loose with history - I really don't like that. But the film looks great, and Gibson is great when he does his emotey thing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review James F That rare combination of laughably inept and enragingly stupid. Too long and too tedious to qualify as a camp classic. It's just a bad film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Horn S The movie was lazy and cookie cutter. Was able to predict alot of the movie. The characters are undeveloped and the swords look like rubber in some scenes. And it has narration at the beginning and end which is just lazy exposition. You won't care about about the charecters or the story and just be a boring waste of three hours. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Joel H Mel Gibson did a terrific job at directing a world-class film. This movie is a must watch for anybody that's needing a pick me up. Harper Barnes St. Louis Post-Dispatch It's unclear when Mel Gibson became a combination of Sam Peckinpah and Akira Kurosawa, but there's no question that Braveheart is one of the best epic movies of the '90s... Scene after scene takes your breath away with its sometimes cruel beauty. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Bob Fenster Arizona Republic In only his second film behind the camera, Gibson has crafted a historical epic, Braveheart, that stands tall among the biggest and the best: Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, El Cid. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Ella Taylor L.A. Weekly Epic in length only and peppered with sniggering homophobia, the homage to Himself drags on for three hours going on three years. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily ...a huge film with incredible action sequences, an emotional love story, and a few technical wonders... Braveheart remains a thrilling and entertaining epic Jun 27, 2023 Full Review Rick James Alabama Forum The film is rich, multi-layered and lush. May 4, 2023 Full Review Betsy Sherman The Improper Bostonian As he did with The Man Without a Face, Gibson takes his directorial chores so seriously that he squeezes the life out of the piece.
