- abbaMilan, Italy4 contributionsA symbol of the country's historyThe gate is composed of 12 Doric arches and is crowned with a Quadriga, or chariot with four horses, on top. The reliefs on the monument depict scenes from Greek mythology, with the center relief showing the goddess of victory, Victoria, driving the chariot. The gate is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Germany and is a must-see for any traveler. Its Baroque architecture and intricate reliefs make it a stunning sight to behold. Whether you're visiting Berlin or just passing through, the Brandenburg Gate is sure to take your breath away.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 3, 2023
- BradlyParis, France10 contributionsHistorical landmarkIt is a symbol of the city’s tumultuous past and a reminder of its rich history. The gate is composed of 12 arches, and its central arch is topped by a sculpture of a chariot drawn by four horses, known as the Quadriga, which is a symbol of victory. The gate was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia in 1791 and was built in the neoclassical style. The Brandenburg Gate stands as a triumphal arch, and is a symbol of peace and unity, with its many sculptures and symbols representing the history of the city. It is a great place to visit and learn more about the city’s past. It is also a great place to take photos and enjoy the beauty of the architecture.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 9, 2023
- WALILondon, United Kingdom9 contributionsAmazing landmarkIt is a symbol of Prussian power and a reminder of the city's turbulent history. The gate is a stunning piece of architecture, with its Quadriga of horses and chariot atop the gate, flanked by two statues of the goddess Victoria. The friezes on the sides of the gate depict scenes from the Prussian army's victories in the 18th century. It is a sight to behold! The Brandenburg Gate German is a great example of the city's rich history and culture, and it is a great place to take a picture or spend some time reflecting.Visited May 2023Written May 10, 2023
- govan4meSydney, Australia79 contributionsEssential venue to a visit to BerlinThis is an essential visit due to the historical and cultural significance of the structure. The structure is impressive and provides great photo opportunities. There were a number of protests in progress when we visited and this is apparently quite normal.Visited April 2023Written May 15, 2023
- Kay CMelbourne, Australia295 contributionsA place of historyDid you know that the plaza in front of the Brandenberg Gate is known as Little Paris. Thus, the Germanic/Prussian conqueror on top of the gate forever looks down on the symbolic French plaza. And contemplate for a moment that the Berlin Wall ran immediately behind the Brandenberg Gate such that you could walk through the gate but no further. The gate lies on the East Berlin side of the wall.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 5, 2023
- GertieRudersdorf, Germany5 contributionsA monumental tourist attraction! The Brandenburg Gate is a Prussian masterpiece that is truly monumental. It is a must-see tourist attraction for anyone visiting Germany. Its impressive size and grandeur are sure to leave you in awe. I highly recommend visiting this majestic structure to experience its grandeur firsthand. It is a must-see for anyone who loves history and architecture. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience a piece of Prussian history!Visited July 2023Written July 18, 2023
- Zachary PRudersdorf, Germany16 contributionsBeautiful gate. It's impressiveSuch an old and stately monument. Also with the historical events. It is one of the many historic buildings in Berlin. Standing tall and proud, these statues are a reminder of the strength and resilience of the German people. They are a symbol of hope and freedom, and a reminder that no matter what life throws at us, we can overcome it.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 20, 2023

It’s set in a really nice area with impressive building around, but it’s the iconic Brandenburg Gate that we have all seen on TV and in movies that everyone wanted to photograph. Definitely a “must do” in BerlinVisited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 23, 2023
- Sharon N14 contributionsImpressive piece of history.Very impressive gate & glad I saw it in real life. It is a very, very crowded tourist spot but that doesn't stop all the cyclists flying through the at speed so keep your eyes open! Tourist information is right next to the gate which is handy. There are lots of embassies through it & it was fun flag spotting. We spent about half an hour here.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 28, 2023

We got down at the brandenburg tor subway station and walked to the gate. Visiting early in the morning is the best way to beat the crowd. When we were there at 7 am, it is literally just our family in the whole place... later when we passed by it around 10 am, the place was packed.

Since it’s construction in 1788-1791 the Brandenburg gate has been a symbol of Berlin and has been at the heart of many historic moments. Built at a time of nationalism and after the restoration of order after Batavian Revolution it has seen Neapolitan March though and after his defeat the Prussian army, used as a backdrop during WWII and a symbol of a decided city after. It was at the heart of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today it has been restored and is a great place reflect, take photos, and people watch.

Was closed for Sylvester concert so we couldn't visit it from 26th/12 to 3/01. A huge concert was organized on the 31/12 the entrance is free but you've to arrive early before 3pm if you want to be next to the scene. There is everything you need to drinks food and souvenirs. A midnight the launched fireworks.

Definitely worth the visit, went there with the wife and then read a bit about the history and it was very interesting.
On the inside of the gate there was the US embassy on one side and on the other side there is a restaurant called MAMMA, don’t eat there under any circumstances. The served locals who arrived later before tourists, charged for things we didn’t receive, took an hour to get a pizza which was cold and essentially ignored us most of the time.
Oh and my wife and I watched the waiter compile bread out of baskets and put them in one and reserve that bread to a new table. Now that’s just gross.

This gate is best at night for photos. It's nicely lighted up and makes a great backdrop for your selfies or whatever.
It's better to see it during the light of day to really see the minute details as well as the statues at the top of the gate too.
It's vibrant and beautiful at night. Reminds me of he historic and iconic symbolism of the arc de triomphe in Paris. I think the photo from there looked almost identical in fact.

Berlin Marathon 2021 - Myself and my wife visited Berlin in Sept 2021 for me t take part in the Marathon.
Having been to the City before one of our favourite places is around the Brandenburg Gates and surrounding areas (Parks and River).
The Gates are such an amazing feature of the City and have huge historical significance.
We loved walking around them during the day or even better when lit up at night. We even sat on a nearby bench one night and watched the world go by.
Definately should be on your list with any visit to Berlin

Located in a really centralised place, the Brandenburg Gate is a great piece of art. During the Berlin visit it’s a must do. There is an infopoint at the bottom of the gate, marked with big red I letter, also there is a Starbucks and other places to seat if you feel like you would spend some time here. Great for families and couples also. Toilet is available nearby, as well as food.

We were able to visit the gate today after passing it the last 3 days. We learnt Saturdays tend to be demonstration day by the gate, so lucky we did it today.
It is beautiful and must see but it will always be busy so just be patient.

The Brandenburg Gate is an iconic monument to Germany which stands alone, making it even more impressive. The monument was included in a walking tour we took and the guide explained the history of Germany to us and how the monument came about. If you visit Berlin then a visit to the Brandenburg Gate is not to be missed.

It is huge and imposing building. The numbers around the area were high. There was a bride and groom having wedding photos at the time. We enjoyed seeing this most famous monument up close and it did not disappoint. We were unfortunate not to see it at night as well though.

I think is better to go in the morning... too many people waiting for these monuments. Of course for the Brandenburg gate you don't need to wait in a queue. Enjoy your holidays!!
when does the tour start

It depends on what tour you want to go on, but I would recommend Fat Tire Bike tours. They start at 11 am!
I went in 1983 we were with the British forces, there was tanks on the side of the road which had soldiers concreted in at attention. is this true.?

As the others have said there's no need to take a tour. We walked from our hotel to soak up the atmosphere and history and used our guide books and maps . There are numerous information boards around in different languages which were informative ,helpful and FREE! Go and enjoy!

I have a 14 hour layover at night in Berlin next month. From 8pm to 10am. Is there anything I can do or go see from the airport.

Ah!! As great as Berlin is, it goes to bed early!! The lovely areas I took my family simply shut down after 8-9pm!! I was told there are areas in the outskirts where there are clubs and bars but with young children, I did not pursue these. However, to my disappointment, the amazing areas around Brandenburg gate and Potsdam plaza literally shut shop and become ghost towns!!

More a general question about Berlin, we are looking to visit over the Easter weekend and wondered if attractions and restaurants would be open as usual? Thanks

It looks like Easter is a great time to visit Germany, since Easter is one of their most celebrated holidays. Many events and special markets and decorations. I wouldn't worry about that.

The Brandenburg Gate is always open, but like the other answer, it will be hugely crowded on New Years Eve. If you are using public transit, check the S-Bahn schedule. You'll have to take the S-Bahn to connect. Night buses run all night, but the routes are slightly different and some do not run very often. Taxis are always available.
