Orlando City wins first game of the season against Austin FC
In his first MLS start, Jack Lynn scored his first MLS goal. Veteran Nico Lodeiro added another through a free kick as Orlando City snapped their 4-game winless start to the regular season to claim a 2-0 victory over Austin FC on Saturday in front of an announced crowd of 20,985 at Inter&Co Stadium. The Lions entered the game with a depleted lineup. Key attackers Facundo Torres (Uruguay) and Duncan McGuire (U.S. U-23) were called up to their respective national teams in this weekend's slate of games. Forward Ramiro Enrique suffered a last-minute ankle injury leading up to the game against Austin. That meant Lynn was the only viable option at forward as coach Oscar Pareja continued to deploy Luis Muriel into a deeper role. Lynn, who won the 2023 MLS Next Pro Golden Boot after 34 goals with Orlando City B, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute after heading in a cross from Dagur Dan Thorhallsson. Nico Lodeiro scored Orlando’s second goal in the 64th minute after curling in a free kick past Brad Stuver. Mason Stajduhar started at goalkeeper on Saturday to fill in for Pedro Gallese, who’s with the Peruvian national team. Other players who missed the game were David Brekalo (Slovenia), Abdi Salim (Somalia), Wilder Cartagena (Peru), and Favian Loyola (U.S. U-17). Cesar Araujo was out again after an ankle injury on March 9 against Minnesota. Orlando is back in action on March 30 against the New York Red Bulls at Inter&Co Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
