As another reviewer states... if you don't like this then you don't like Scott Walker. Here is the perfect statement of his sumptuous, literary music. It's pop music of the very traditional kind, yet so layered and twisted into extraordinary shapes that it starts to sound like something far too magical to be just labelled as 'pop'. A remarkable sound - what a talent.

Good introduction to walker, if you don't like this leave him well alone.

Personally i've always admired how whilst the rest of music was freaking out behind acid that he was making songs about the harsh truths of the world whether it's the bored couple of "amorous humphrey plugg" or the lonely transvestite on "big louise" or my personal favourites the romantic angst of "such a small love" and "boy child". His voice is unique, but it's beautiful.

I would have liked "always coming back to you" instead of "the plague" but hey-ho. It's still a great compilation.

I bought this as a Walker-virgin, a mere interested party, having heard so much about his legend. I think it probably serves as a useful introduction, and charts the course of his first solo period; it shows a movement from French derived, string-soaked melodrama (which, when it is balanced perfectly, is absolutely, utterly magnificent) to the beginnings of a more idiosyncratic, personal vision.
As are all collections, this of course takes songs out of the context of their album settings, and listening to the whole thing in its entirety becomes slightly exhausting. However, as stated at the beginning, an interesting introduction, and definitely whets my appetite to hear more, especially the world of Walker that extends beyond the time period of these recordings.

The best place to start for all Scott Walker beginners maybe even just a good collection for anyone interested in just catch all album containing the pick of the tracks from the first five solo albums. It would be improved if a couple of the Brel covers were included but still a worthwhile compilation nonetheless.

The first track is a single B side, tracks 2 to 15 are from the four "Scott" albums, and entirely written by him, tracks 16 to 19 are co-written by Ady Semel and are from "'Til the Band Comes In", and the last one is a wondrous oddity: a song from a French western (shot in the Camargue !), the only one here not from Scott Walker.
If you are curious of the first solo period of Scott Walker, there is no better place. After that, you may follow my trace and buy the albums, then the Walker Bothers ones, then try the post-1970 and avant-garde stuff (which could not be more different from this ...)
I personally regret he did not write and record more songs. He was so good. Amazing voice. The missing link between Sinatra and Phil Spector, with some Brel (and his voice is better than Brel's ...)

The production is generally awful, so you have to wade through that mess, but the songwriting is quality. The vocals are way too high, but when you think about it, you probably wouldn't want the music to be higher either, as it's overloaded with terrible syrup-drippy strings.

However, the songs are great, and the cabaret aesthetic makes the dark Walker vision stand out. It becomes a bit more disturbing, and maybe it's appropriately ironic (not the intention, I'm sure, just a fortunate side effect).

If you are yet to fall in love with Scott Walker's music, this is a perfect place to start. Walker's own compostiotions (no Jacques Brel here) from his solo albums 1-4 plus a handful of other songs.

Absolute classic: The Seventh Seal

Other great tracks: It's Raining Today, Montague Terrace (In Blue), Little Things (That Keep Us Together), The War Is Over (Sleepers), Such a Small Love, The Old Man's Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime)

Also: Plastic Palace People, Copenhagen, The Girls from the Street, Time Operator, The Rope and the Colt, Boy Child

As Pianotunes pointed out, Scott's work is an acquired taste, but if you get it... Christ! This stuff is gold-dust, elegantly tragic, with immense yet bleak walls of sound towering down on melancholy old Scott and his heavenly voice. It's seen by many as a croon, but for his devoted followers, it means so much more. This is a great introduction for those who want to dip their toes in the water, so to speak, featuring 20 of his own compositions from his first 5 solo albums. Remember that it's only an introduction, and that there is much more to hear from him on his albums themselves. If you like this, you can't really go wrong with the rest of his back-catalogue.
