The area
Address
Neighborhood: Lakeview
Lakeview extends inland from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain with much of the area reserved for family-friendly City Park. Home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, and the city’s own lush Botanical Gardens, City Park is a New Orleans gem and the perfect spot for outdoor fun with as much of a mix of culture and/or amusement as you would like. Beyond City Park more great excuses to stay outside beckon, whether on land or by boat. Developed a good deal later than most other New Orleans neighborhoods, Lakeview has a distinctively different look and feel compared to other parts of the city. Fans of mid century modern design and contemporary architecture particularly enjoy leisurely drives around the residential streets of Lake Vista, Park Island and along Lakeshore Drive.

- robert cSunnyvale, California3,517 contributionsno model trains in sight, let alone no model trains runningCame here by trolley from Canal Street next to the French Quarter. Canal street trolley route still severed by the wreckage of the Hard Rock Hotel, so you need to catch the trolley north of the wreckage, about a mile from the center of the French Quarter. Leave your stilettos for the nighttime, and wear comfortable shoes, as we walked at least a half mile walk from the trolley stop to get here. $8 admission to the gardens, located behind the Art Museum. And right at the entrance is the obligatory gift shop. If you don't want to pay the $8, you can see the outside Sculpture museum area free, and then wander through the 1300 acres of New Orleans Park, checking out the stadiums, ponds, canals. But even a cheap skate like me can afford the $8. Some magnificent vistas, walkways, arches, architecture, and water fountains. Came here in January, so no roses in bloom. Wife thrilled by numerous butterflies in the butterfly garden area, the Japanese garden, and the greenhouse full of cactus, making it worthwhile for one of us. Highlight of the day for me was seeing the model train, with a circular track running maybe 150 feet through miniature sections of the city, complete with houses, buildings, water towers, railway stations, restaurants, and vehicles stopped at the railroad gates. At least they have the track laid out, as we didn't see any trains, let alone trains running today. Was told that the train runs on weekends, before the pandemic hit. The city has apparently cut back on garden maintenance, due to the pandemic, so some of the lawns and nurseries are starting to look a little ragged with weeds, just like my back yard! $8 admission fee waived on Wednesdays, but for locals only!Visited January 2021Written April 7, 2021
- The_Loup_GarouPhoenix, Arizona166,281 contributionsA Nice March Visit to the New Orleans Botanical GardensIt had been many years, since we visited the New Orleans Botanical Gardens, located in City Park, but in March, we finally got back. Our previous visit was for a family wedding there, and the Botanical Gardens was still coming back from Hurricane Katrina. It was open, well partially open, but much had changed by this time. It still was not back to its former glory, but then the same can still be said for much of City Park, and New Orleans in general. We enjoyed the Japanese Gardens exhibit the most, but think that was more because of the display itself - however it was a very tranquil place, just to pause. I had wanted to see the Train Garden, but it was not open. The docent indicated that it would be soon enough, so hope to see it, on our next visit to New Orleans. The entrance building looked freshly painted, and it was easy to see which exhibits were new, or freshly done. Compared to the vast 140 acre Desert Botanical Garden, or the one in Tokyo, or Sydney, New Orleans’ Botanical Gardens is rather small, but then the entirety of City Park is mostly a botanical garden, to begin with. A very worthwhile stop on our visit to City Park, and I think that it is coming along nicely. I would dedicate at least two hours to this lovely, tranquil garden.Visited March 2019Written February 8, 2020
- MearcatsLetchworth Garden City, United Kingdom247 contributionsMagnificent New Orleans Botanical Gardens. The Botanical Gardens were the most beautiful place I visited in New Orleans. $12 admission which was very worth it. The gardens are magnificent with the most beautiful Waterlilies I have ever seen. The greenhouses are so fantastic and I loved every minute of our visit. I would recommend the gardens to anyone who is craving some peaceful meditation time as I knew it would be a party city but New Orleans never stops.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 25, 2023
- Michelle TNew York City, New York611 contributionsLovely Botanical GardensSince I’m now a New York Botanical Garden member, I also get free access to other member botanical gardens. When I first discovered this, I started looking at all the BGs around the US, hoping to make use of my membership. NOBG is a member garden, so we were both able to get in for free. If you’re not a member, the price is $12 per adult We spent about 1.5 hours at NOBG. At 10 acres, there is a lot to see. Their conservatory is smaller than NYBG, but there are a ton of really nice flowers in there. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and if the weather is nice, it’s a wonderful place to spend a few hours. There are tons of benches under trees for shade and I can see myself coming here often just to hang out with some friends if I lived in the area. It’s also conveniently located in City Park, right next to the art museum, which is free to visit.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2023
- Rob O'LearyGlenwood Springs, Colorado74 contributionsBig things come in small packagesThe is a must do when exploring city park in New Orleans. Not the biggest or most extravagant botanical garden I have ever seen, but easily my favorite. Everything is so well thought out and presented, especially the Japanese Yakumo garden and cactus exhibit. Just a great place to walk around and explore amazing plants. Don't skip it!Visited April 2021Written April 6, 2021
- JimbillyBeverly Hills, Florida454 contributionsA DISSAPOINTMENTI was very disappointed with my visit to the gardens on April 22 Earth Day. They did not have any special events that day. The gardens had some flowers in bloom and as for the time of year I would have expected much more. The Japanese gardens was a big disappointment and I have never seen one such unkept. The positive was the walkways were very well arranged throughout. Looking at past reviews maybe I have just been spoiled in past botanical garden visits around the country. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder for me this garden and I was not impressed as a gardener myself.Visited April 2022Written April 30, 2022
- slowee08Carrboro, North Carolina682 contributionsWow, just WowDecided to get away from the hustle and bustle of the French quarter and spend a leisurely day at the New Orleans botanical garden. It’s located in the city park which is 1300 acres large. The botanical garden section is 12 acres with lots of beautiful flowers, Japanese gardens, cactus gardens, lots and lots to see and enjoy.Visited March 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten March 21, 2020
- cheersladySpicer, Minnesota51 contributionsFamily, 20-80This was a nice enjoyable walk. It wasn't as extensive as either the aboreteum or conservatory back home. Unfortunately, FREE Wednesdays are only for locals. parking was good. Enjoyed the little Japanese Garden and the Vegetable garden. A few nice sculptures, but this is not the Sculpture Garden that's included with the Art Museum. Butterfly garden wasn't as hoped. Greenhouse had two huge alligator gars in pond.Visited March 2020Traveled with familyWritten March 13, 2020
- Hannah JacoleGulfport, Mississippi53 contributionsBeautiful Afternoon StrollIncredible display of thousands of plants, from trees to flowers to succulents, and even vegetable gardens. We easily spent most of the afternoon here, and I still don't feel like I saw everything. Would make an amazing venue for a celebration, wedding, or photoshoots! Definitely planning to return soon.Visited May 2022Traveled with friendsWritten June 6, 2022

Do take time to visit these gardens. It is well worth $8 to see the careful cultivations and water features on display.
The photos hopefully will give you the sense of tranquil beauty that rewards the visitor that ventures in.

Get the tramcar to the City park, the gardens are a peaceful way to spend a couple of hours. Even more impressive when you consider they were virtually destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Well worth the entrance fee

We have been to many gardens and this one was well worth the visit. We got in free as we are members at another garden but even if I had to pay the nominal $8 I would rate it as a good value. We will return if in the area again and recommend it for anybody that likes gardens

In beautiful City Park, the botanical though not the easiest to find, is worth the low admission price. Entering into edible gardens and directly to my personal favorite the aromatic and medicinal gardens. There is a small Japanese garden, southern garden, rose gardens, fountains, archways, pools and many other beautiful installments.

Central city was pretty hecktic to we took the red streetcar to the end of the line, to beautiful City Park and explored the botanical gardens complex. This is a classic European style park. Go slowly & enjoy the views. You might as well also visit the sculpture gardens next door.

While perhaps not a world-class botanical garden, this is a nice municipal garden well worth the price of admission. We caught it in fairly early spring, just after the azaleas and before there was too much else blooming. Lots of volunteers were apparent, getting the place primped up for the Summer season. There was a lot of variety to be found while walking around the facility. Several of us really liked the extensive sculptures, while another liked the large outdoor train exhibit (which only runs on weekends). The kitchen/herb garden was closed while building is going on to create a true outdoor kitchen for future programs.

We're not sure why anybody stays in the French Quarter when you can visit this exceptional park! Great variety of architecture, sculpture and plantings. Don't miss the miniature train village. The gift shope was really nice and reasonably priced as well. We loved our visit here and will come back every time we are in the area! Wonderful park next door, Storyland, for all the littles! I would think any child under 10 would absolutely love it!

It was my birthday and my son suggested the botanical gardens. I wasn’t super excited, but this is so his thing, and I love to see his face beaming. The weather was perfect, and it was a great experience. A lot of money and time goes into this garden! It was well manicured and had lots of sculptures and an artistic element. I loved the butterfly garden. They have a veggie and herb garden and are building an outdoor cooking kitchen. They plan on having interactive cooking classes. I love it! Can’t wait to come back and visit when that is up and running.

With lovely weather and the gardens in bloom, this was a fabulous visit. Classic, traditional gardens. A couple of family type swings in an area that's less manicured. Fountains and beauty!

Located within the gigantic City Park right by the New Orleans Museum of Art, the botanical gardens are a great way to appreciate a nice spring day. It's hard not to appreciate an $8 entrance ticket. Wonderfully manicured outdoor exhibits, including a cacti house and moderated indoor rainforest climates. Fun miniature train track for kids as well.

the person before me said, it is not driveable but there is parking and although I didn't see it (we took a bus) I'm sure there are handicapped spots. It is wheelchair accessible. The sculpture garden is wonderful. enjoy your trip.

Yes! Ralph's on the Park is right there. Also, there is a cantina type restaurant in the park. Finally, the art museum has a cafe that has pretty good food.

We will be staying at the Prytania Park Hotel on the St. Charles line in April. What is the best way to get to the botanical gardens via streetcar?
SimbiPetwo
New Orleans, LA177 contributions
Take the streetcar from St. Charles to Canal and then down Canal to Carrollton. Stay on streetcar onto Carrollton and get off at City Park and then walk into the park to the Botanical Gardens. Very, very easy. Should take around 30 minutes. Canal is the widest boulevard in North America and a nice streetcar ride.
