For second baseman Vaughn Grissom, Tuesday’s series-opener against the Giants has been a long time coming.
Grissom, who came to Boston in late December as part of the Chris Sale trade with the Braves, has yet to make his Red Sox debut. The 23-year-old missed the first month of the season due to a groin injury. However, after completing a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester, Grissom could be making his way into the lineup just in time to take on San Francisco.
“If everything goes well, I do believe he’s going to be with us,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday before his team’s 5-4 win over the Cubs, per the Globe’s Julian McWilliams.
Beginning his rehab on April 12, Grissom’s slow start at the plate was short lived. Over nine games in Worcester (36 AB), he slashed .333/.444/.400/.844 with 2 doubles.
While Grissom’s major league sample-size from 2023 was lean (23 games), his stellar performance with the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers last season offers hope down the stretch for the young infielder-turner-outfielder.
Grissom is expected to be paired with rookie Ceddanne Rafaela, the newly-named everyday shortstop filling in for Trevor Story following his season-ending shoulder injury.
According to McWilliams, infielders David Hamilton or Enmanuel Valdez will likely be optioned to the WooSox in order to create space ahead of Grissom’s return.
The Red Sox face the San Francisco Giants Tuesday at 7:10 p.m., the first of the three-game series at Fenway Park.
