With Santana maintaining their successful stay on the jazz fusion spectrum as
well as the occasional R&B or rock charts with mixed results, they would release
their next album in 1975, their sixth overall, when they again credited themselves
with individual credits listed for each song. Despite few problems, Borboletta had
manage to become another successful venture for them as Carlos turned toward
a casual complement of high-pitched guitar work while the percussions pounded
away to whom they handled the making of this album so well and in good hands.
Backed by a track set beginning with Spring Manifestations/ Canto De Los Flores
that proceed with Life Is Anew, the harmonic serendipity charm of Practice What
You Preach, the delightful Give And Take, the instrumental landscape of Mirage,
Here And There and the African-style title track. Though Borboletta (which stand
for `butterfly' in Portuguese) did reached the Top 20 on the album charts and also
spent less time their, it would produce plenty of robust success, as Carlos leaves
us plenty of room for percussion, keyboard and saxophone solos to set the mood
(evident on Spring Manifestations), as well as Carlos' guitar (evident on Promise
Of A Fisherman) and vocals (evident on the funky guitar-led Give And Take) as it
gives Borboletta it's style and finesse. The album features guest appearances by
noted jazz vocalist Flora Purim, Airto Moriera, and master electric bassist Stanley
Clarke, which makes this session a well-deserved classic and a dazzling listening
experience that will give it some greater attention.

I just listened to this album for the first time and found it to be an outstanding musical experience. Running just over 50 minutes, my interest was captivated from beginning to end; lush, beautiful keyboards throughout, great drums/percussion, beautiful singing & of course Carlos Santana's brilliant guitar solos giving the landscape some fire. Lyrically, this is the album of a seeker although the questions posed are offered in the form of conclusions drawn by one looking for answers from Life. Although I did not always agree with these assertions, never-the-less I certainly understand them as parts of the human experience here in this world. Musically speaking, the absolutely gorgeous sound here on this album is WOW!!! Not Rock music, not Jazz, not even Fusion...but a virtuostic amalgam of all three musical art forms that I would compare most closely with Chick Corea's "Return To Forever" band from the same time period(the early 70's)but make no mistake, this is a distinctly "Santana" album. I feel that this brilliant album defies a firm genre "label" and must simply say that it is brilliantly beautiful & I highly recommend it-I'm absolutely delighted that I chose to buy this album & give it a close listen. Enjoy & God bless :-)

Borboletta is a cd that I missed when it first came out. I had been to a Santana concert and it was when Carlos was into Indian music and I did not care for that type of music so I stopped buying Santana music. After Santana came out with Santana 4 with the original group (mostly). I bought it and I really liked it and when I read the reviews and Borboletta was mentioned in the reviews in a positive way I bought it also. I really like Borboletta. I enjoy the latin rock sound.

This album is not very well know for a lot of people even fans of the early
days. Produced after "Welcome" it as the same spirit then "Caravanseraï" and sound closely to it even if there is new musicians.
It must be consider as a beautiful achivement equall to the first four albums. This remastered Japanese new version is absolutely perfect and sounds much and much better then the first print. A real pleasure to listened to it (again and again). But the great surprise is the artwork with is original color (metallic blue) not the blue that we have even on the original LP. Maybe the most beautiful cover of all the Santana's album.
If you like the first albums of Santana buy this Japanese version of Borboletta and you will enjoy again the great work of this unique period.

With his sixth studio release, 1974's BORBOLETTA, Carlos Santana finally ran out of things to say - musically, lyrically, atmospherically or in any way that mattered. The beautiful cover of this album is by far its strongest element, and the butterfly makes an ironically apt symbol for a collection which contains the last few fragile flutterings of a great career on its headlong rush into slick, superficial pop mediocrity - where, with very few exceptions, it has remained ever since.
Sure, there are some passable jams ("Flor de Canela," "Promise of a Fisherman") and pretty, sleep-inducing passages ("Canto de los Flores," "Aspirations") among the dross here; but who really cares anymore? The pseudospiritual nonsense of numbers like "Give and Take," "Practice What You Preach" and (worst of all) "Mirage" is what sets the tone of this set, and no amount of flashy fingerwork or reverb can redeem it. At best, this is a reasonably good half an album of instrumentals - which themselves really just explore overworked territory once again - balanced with a group of schmaltzy (if tightly played) MOR songs that are almost laughable in their sophomoric feel-good philosophizing. Fans of the later, even more commercial Santana sound may be impressed, and older loyalists can probably find an agreeable nugget or two by skipping around the more painful stretches; I myself, however, consider it more rewarding to switch the covers of this album and WELCOME and pretend that that's how they were released in the first place.

Obra maestra de Santana
Reviewed in Spain on May 1, 2023
