      Critics Consensus

Bombshell benefits from a terrific cast and a worthy subject, but its impact is muffled by a frustrating inability to go deeper than the sensationalistic surface. Read critic reviews

Unavoidably divisive, but that is the nature of the beast - and to a degree, further proves just one of the film's points that sexual harassment shouldn't be clouded by political discourse. ‘Bombshell' asks the right questions of the viewer and opens up the right conversations, and I love it for that. Critics are selective over when they choose to play the "remember - this is a movie, not a documentary" card as a defense and when they readily flip the argument to attack a film for not being factually meticulous. ‘Bombshell's a different beast; it ignites rage, empathy, raised eyebrows, laughs, and uncomfortable truths over concerns that are still spilling into our everyday conversations - and afterward, I took the time to revisit accounts from the real people involved. As far as integrity goes, the film holds up. As a compulsively provocative watch, it slyly channels Roger Ailes' mantras regarding "must-watch" television. And strictly as a piece of bittersweet entertainment, I enjoyed the hell out of the ride. ‘Bombshell' latches onto the most sensational, sound bite-ready parts of this history, sticks to the truth where the heart of the matters are concerned (save for one paradoxical scene), and compacts and emphasizes the motivations of these people without turning them into caricatures. All three leading ladies ace their roles with A-game conviction - and what the script and these actresses are able to cleanly convey are the complications of workplace harassment scenarios in which women are quickly dragged down into alienation quicksand - before and after the fact. I find the hypocrisies that make up the Fox News workspace fascinating and recognize that they're not unique to that particular news conglomerate. It's not essential whether Gretchen Carlson is labelled a martyr or not. Even if the victims possess self-serving drawbacks (Megyn Kelly) or misguided ambitions (Kayla), that doesn't change the bottomline that the cycle of harassment needs to be struck down. I'm intrigued by ‘Bombshell' bringing up how pressure can still be placed on women, even as victims, to relinquish their individual agency and make sure they "speak for all". At the end of the day, if a "based on true events" film can both rile me up and lower my shields, it gets my vote.

Not nearly as bad as I anticipated but still a painfully uninteresting examination of this scandal.

Incredibly provocative and controversial, Bombshell is a compelling issue drama. While the film purports to be about the Roger Ailes scandal of 2016, it just uses that as a pretext to tell a sexual harassment drama (and to take some knocks at FOX News). Half of the main characters are fictitious and there wasn't any cooperation from the alleged victims, so there's no real attempt to tell the true story of what happened. Still, it's an engaging and evocative story about an important social issue. And the film has a strong cast that includes Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, and John Lithgow. Bombshell has some problems, and isn't exactly fair and balanced, but it presents a chilling look at the struggles that women go through in the workplace.

Performances are all outstanding, but it's not a movie. It's more like HBO.
