Sir Bobby Charlton’s Soccer School, which helped discover David Beckham, is sadly shutting down
Now though, the feeder footballing and sports organisation based in Parrs Wood, East Didsbury has entered liquidation as of 23 December 2022.
The news of its insolvency was confirmed by The Gazette with Paul Weber, a partner at financial advisory firm Leigh Adams, overseeing the process. It marks the end of an important and historic sporting institution.
The soccer school is thought to have been in at least £40,000 of debt when liquidation was announced, £30,000 of which was owed to Lloyds Bank who provided a business loan to the company to help them survive during and after the pandemic.

Sir Bobby is said to have to ended his involvement with the company some time ago but the business has still carried his name for nearly 45 years.
Holding various summer and residential sports camps abroad, Bobby Charlton’s Soccer Schools reached all across the globe, setting up their first initiatives in Dubai as recently as 2017.
The United legend and 1966 World Cup winner set up the organisation way back in 1978 and went on to help launch the careers of countless players throughout the British football pyramid and further afield.
The Academy, accountants at Leigh Adams and associated figures at the Manchester United Foundation are yet to issue a statement.
Nevertheless, Sir Bobby’s legacy and the impact of his academies live on.

Dave Challinor labelled ‘top class’ after touching tribute to late young fan as Stockport County secure League Two title
Danny Jones
Stockport County manager Dave Challinor is being labelled as “top class” after he decided to dedicate his team winning the League Two title to young fan George Thompson, who sadly passed awayin 2021, honouring him in a truly touching tribute.
The former defender, who made a century of appearances for the club back in his playing days before ultimately returning to Edgeley Park as head coach back in 2021, saw his high-flying and free-scoring side seal the League Two title in a 5-2 win over Notts County on Tuesday night.
Promotion was already secured this past weekend but Challinor has insisted from the start that his squad only wanted to go up one way: as champions. More importantly, he wanted to provide the fans and one local family in particular with something extra special to remember.
With a trophy lift and more jubilant scenes still to come this Saturday, the 48-year-old made sure to mark the celebrations in the best way possible by asking lifelong supporter and father Dave Thompson if he could borrow a very meaningful flag that has become so important to the entire County fan base.
After the final whistle blew and the team went over to celebrate in front of the travelling fans who made the weeknight journey to Meadow Lane in Nottingham, the manager wasted no time in picking out Dave in the crowd and carrying the flag made in memory of his late son George over to his squad.
George Thompson was a loyal County fan and regular matchgoer who tragically died after being hit by a train back in October 2021 at the age of just 18, only a month before Challinor was given the job.
The young fan struggled with mental health for several years before his death and had already been rushed to hospital once after previously trying to step in front of a train in September. He had described lows as being like battling through “thunderstorms” and sadly decided to take his own life.
Ever since his dad has been helping raise money for mental health and suicide prevention causes such as the Mentell Charity formed by fellow Stockport locals. In August 2023, Dave and his other son Will set themselves the challenge of boxing for as many minutes as possible over 24 hours in honour of George, who loved combat sports.
A gut-wrenching local story that the Hatters have taken deep into their hearts, the personalised St George’s Cross is carried to virtually every County game and to see it held aloft by the players clearly hit home for all those involved, let alone just the Thompsons.
Reacting in the immediate aftermath as Challinor came over to grab the flag, George’s dad simply said: “I have no words. If you saw the end, then you know”.
Not only was it a championship-sealing win but Notts County also happened to be the last away game the youngster ever attended, with Dave going on to thank the Chester-born coach for “creating something so, so special” and a moment he’ll never forget.
As expected, the heartfelt gesture moved countless SK natives and more, with people labelling the moment “superb”, and “Just beautiful” as well as having brought them to tears, not to mention hailing Challinor as “absolutely top class” and “a special man in charge full of empathy and decency”.
In his own words, “Cheers, thank you.” Doesn’t quite seem enough but to you DC, @1DaveCon@clinthill29 Lord Stott, Sir Steve Bellis and all of the players and staff, as a family we are forever with you. Thank you for tonight. I’ll never forget that moment. G would have loved it. pic.twitter.com/HrjYi5Q4Zf
As for the man himself, he has come out to declare winning League Two with the Hatters as “the greatest achievement” of his career to date, crediting the likes of club legend Paddy Madden – who scored his second hattrick in four games – and fan Graham Allsopp, who currently lives in France but sent him a ‘lucky gold pen’ at the start of the season which has clearly worked wonders.
That’s now two promotions with County for Challinor and seven promotions all-told as a manager, with this being his first-ever EFL title and County’s first in the football league since 1967. Quite the achievement indeed for a club that languished in non-league for over a decade.
You can watch his post-match interview after County’s in full down below and we look forward to seeing them back in the third division next season.
🗣️ "To lift the trophy in front of 10,000 fans will be a great place to be"

Amazon Prime Video release trailer for Man United’s treble documentary, ’99’
Danny Jones
Just a fortnight on from Manchester City releasing their trebledocumentary on Netflix, Manchester United have issued a timely reminder that they did it first by releasing a trailer for their own on Amazon Prime Video.
Oh, we’re about to enjoy some serious online debate and not at all petty social media spats over the next few days. Play nice, everyone…
Simply entitled 99, the new documentary series from fellow streaming giants Amazon will cover Man United‘s hallowed 1998/99 season, where they became the first-ever English club in history to win a treble and went down as one of the greatest teams in football history.
Considered the holy trinity of trophies in Europe – winning the first division in your country, the main domestic cup and the Champions League – the true ‘continental’ treble has only ever been completed by eight teams and the Red Devils are clearly looking to capitalise on the same media buzz as City.

The first trailer for Amazon’s upcoming documentary about Man United’s treble season?
While Man City are still well and truly basking in the glory of achieving the incredible footballing feat, with the possibility of defending all three titles still very much on the cards,
There have been multiple productions celebrating United’s lifting that same trio of trophies in the past, from The Treble season review film released in 1999 itself to the likes of The Impossible Dream released on its 20th anniversary in 2019 and others, but this latest is set to be the comprehensive look yet.
Showing “never-before-seen footage” and featuring the stories “told by those who were there – including David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and more. documentary” – it promises to serve as the “definitive documentary” of United’s treble season.
Naturally, there’s already plenty of discussion rearing its head over which team was more impressive.
Winning a treble with an entire team you built from scratch including 6 academy players. Tell me again SAF isn’t the goat. https://t.co/VisMWD7vzc
City Won The Treble last year but Guess who is having another documentary made about a 25 years old achievement… Manchester United.. no trophy to celebrate but this one we will stream and enjoy well https://t.co/uqu844liGy
Amazon has scheduled 99 for a 17 May release date, just over a month and a half on from City releasing Together: Treble Winners, not to mention dropping the trailer itself barely a fortnight after the fact.
Although many have been quick to point out that the docuseries omits any discussion of their ongoing FFP charges – with Paddy Power even spoofing it as a Netflix true crime drama – it has received largely positive reviews for its fly-on-the-wall look at one of the best teams in the world.
Set to be fittingly spread over three parts, 99 is also being co-created by three different parties: Ventureland, Gary Neville’s production company, Buzz16.2, and David Beckham’s Leigh-based production house, Studio 99.
The latter were obviously heavily involved in the recent Beckham Netflix series, so fans of that can expect similar vibes from Amazon’s documentary on United’s own treble season and the momentous year that was 1999.
