Bobbie’s third release of 1968 was a duets album with label mate and fellow ‘country’ star Glen Campbell. Their easy camaraderie and obvious chemistry made the partnership a great success, resulting in three hit singles and a Gold album. They made numerous TV appearances together including performances on The Grammy’s, Bobbie’s 1968 BBC TV series, and three appearances on Glen’s Goodtime Hour.
Even though the LP is artistically less satisfying than some of Bobbie’s other releases, it remains an enjoyable MOR listen. The collection is mostly based around covers and includes only one Bobbie original, The Delta Sweete’s Mornin’ Glory re-configured (less successfully) as a duet; released as the albums lead single the song was a significant hit on the country and easy listening charts. Glen re-recorded two of his own compositions as well as a charming but slight remake of one of his signature songs, John Hartford‘s Gentle on My Mind. The song selection does feature some surprising cover choices like Simon & Garfunkel‘s take on the traditional Scarborough Fair/Canticle and, a winning cover of Margo Guryan‘s Sunday Morning. The Gentry / Campbell vocal blend works best on the albums second single Let It Be Me, where the pair’s voices harmonize utterly delightfully making it the clear highlight of this set.
