Cape Town is a great place for a holiday and if you are considering just such a holiday, Cape Town is a great place to start. In this blog post, we delve into the best vacation homes and Airbnbs in Cape Town.

The city of Cape Town in South Africa has a long history and it has remained popular throughout this history, largely due to its abundance of nature and variety of natural places to visit.

With a number of different beaches, the ever-impressive Table Mountain and beautiful national parks, Cape Town is a nature lover’s dream.

From herein, we’ll look at some of the best areas of Cape Town to stay in and some of the best vacation homes and Airbnbs in those areas.

Airbnb might be the most widely known website for vacation rentals but that doesn’t make it the best or the cheapest.  To help you compare we expanded our selection to also include vacation homes from other reputable and well-trusted sites such as Booking.com, Expedia and VRBO (which is also part of the Expedia Group).  Check and compare, lower booking and cleaning fees make these other sites cheaper than Airbnb.  Enjoy your trip!.

Best Airbnb experiences in Cape Town

While Airbnb was originally used for accommodations only, they have recently expanded the platform to include experiences.

Airbnb experiences are activities, tours, and classes run by locals to provide a more authentic experience of a new place while traveling.

These experiences allow visitors to gain more insight into the local customs, food, culture, and locations.

As they are run by locals, it is often possible to gain knowledge that might be skipped or missed in common tourist guides.

Depending on the area there are a range of experiences available. That can be everything from food classes, hiking tours, winter activities, to more in-depth tours.

Here we have some of the best Airbnb experiences available in Cape town.

Lion’s Head Sunrise/Sunset Hike

This hike takes place in the scenic area of Lion’s Head with beautiful, picturesque views of the surrounding scenery.

The host, Tauriq, offers the choice of either a sunrise or sunset hike to truly get the best possible views from your walk.

Both times will have some portion of the hike done in the dark but flashlights are provided. Light snacks are also provided and there are regular rest stops along the way.

Regardless, it is important to be aware of your fitness level before undertaking this hike. The walk is not overly difficult, but a certain level of fitness is still required.

Also make sure to wear appropriate hiking clothing, footwear and to bring a water bottle.

This is one of the most highly-recommended locations in Cape Town and this hike will help you experience it at its most beautiful times.

Experience the Stellenbosch Winelands

Visiting the nearby wineries in Stellenbosch is a great Airbnb experiece

South Africa is famous for its wine and this is an opportunity to experience them at their best. At the wineries, you will get the opportunity to taste various wines in optimal conditions. The tastings will be attended by experienced wine aficionados.

Not only this, but the surroundings are beautiful with olive groves, mountains, and more.

This tour covers three wineries – ranging from large and famous through to more boutique, family-owned locations. There is also a stop for lunch and a stop in the town of Stellenbosch to explore the rich culture of the town.

This tour takes place in small groups of up to 6, allowing for a personal experience.

This is a great way to experience the Winelands and taste the wine of South Africa.

Lessons from Apartheid

This is one of Airbnb’s online experiences and so is able to be experienced from home. It is a good way to prepare for your visit to the country by learning a little about its rich history.

It is hosted by Richard, who brings the guest on a virtual tour of some of the most culturally significant sites in South Africa’s history.

Due to his personal experience with apartheid, he is able to provide a personal perspective on a huge part of the history that has shaped South Africa.

While stories of racial segregation, discrimination, and the marginalization that occurred during this time may seem difficult topics, they are approached from a caring and understanding viewpoint, tackling both the realities of the history and the humanity that helped to overcome it.

This is, of course, a great experience for those interested in history.

However, it is also a good opportunity for those who are not usually interested in museums or static displays to experience an engaging personal perspective on history.

Best areas to stay in Cape Town

V&A Waterfront in Cape Town South Africa
V&A Waterfront, an excellent location to stay in Cape Town

Cape Town suburbs:

Here’s an overview of the different suburbs. Click on the suburb to see the Airbnb’s in that part of the city.

Below is some info on each of these suburbs.

V&A Waterfront

V&A Waterfront is, as the name would suggest, right in the harbor with close access to one of the largest wharves.

In fact, this wharf is also the oldest working harbor in the Southern Hemisphere with a long history stretching back to the first European trading ships.

Over time the area has become a luxury neighborhood with the harbor populated by yachts and recreational boats.

The area is also quite popular with tourists as it provides easy access to the central city and is considered safe at all times.

The proximity to the harbor provides close access to boat tours and the ability to experience some of South Africa’s beautiful marine wildlife.

This can include whale watching, visiting African penguin colonies, and more. And for those interested in the history of South Africa, there is also access to boats and tours going to Robben Island.

This is the island where the former South African president, Nelson Mandela, spent most of his years in jail.

The island jail became infamous during the years of apartheid and today is a dark reminder of the history behind the now vibrant country of South Africa.

V&A Waterfront is a great choice of neighborhood to stay in due to its closeness to popular tourist locations and the lively atmosphere.

For some, it may be too ‘touristy’ but it does provide the safeness that is desirable as a tourist.

Airbnbs in V&A

De Waterkant

De Waterkant is a small neighborhood close to the Central Business District (CBD) of Cape Town. It is a quiet neighborhood that has been slowly growing in popularity over the years.

It has a very quirky, modern, and fun atmosphere with a large range of interesting cafes and bars.

The proximity to the CBD allows it to have all the convenience of staying in the center of the city without the high prices that come with it.

De Waterkant is also a very safe neighborhood with private security keeping the area safe.

The area is LGBT+ friendly and is very welcoming.

Some possible downsides include the distance from the sea. Being so close to the middle of the city has the caveat that it is no longer right on the coast.

While it is still easy to take transport to the beaches, it is not so easy to just walk out your door and down to the beach in this neighborhood.

It is also a popular party area, which can be noticed by the number of bars nearby.

This could be either a positive or negative, depending on your style of holidaying but either way is something to keep in consideration.

City Bowl

As in most cities, the CBD, or City Bowl as it is known in Cape Town, is a popular area to stay.

It is the main hub of public transport, allowing access to the entire city and has a wide variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.

There are regular open galleries and street food fairs in City Bowl and with some of the city’s best dining on offer, there is no shortage of options of food or things to do when staying here.

There are also some nice green spaces with foliage on display.

Wapiti Travel icon

However, it is considered one of the less safe areas to stay and it is advised to not walk around the area at night.

It also might not give the ‘Cape Town feel’ that you are looking for, with the distance from the ocean and the sea air.

City Bowl is a bustling hub of cosmopolitan activity, but it comes with the negatives of a central area.

Aerial view on Sea Point
When staying in Sea Point you can hear and smell the ocean

Sea Point

Sea Point is a neighborhood located right between the Atlantic Ocean and Signal Hill.

It is a quiet, local neighborhood with great access to outdoor attractions.

There is a long promenade along the sea and many parks, outdoor gyms, art spaces, and an outdoor public swimming pool.

This is a great choice for families looking for a quieter, more residential neighborhood or for travelers interested in fitness-based activities.

It has crisp, sea air and is close to the seafront. There are also some nearby beaches but these are not suitable for swimming.

However, there are swimming-based beaches nearby so this shouldn’t be too much of a negative.

There is good access to the city and other popular areas. However, the access isn’t as easy as some of the other areas mentioned, so if this is a key feature for you, it may be something to keep in mind.

There are also less cafes and restaurants around the area.

Sea Point is a good option for a quieter, more relaxed style of holiday location.

Aerial view on Green Point
Green point is an extensive green area located around the Cape Town Stadium

Green Point

Green Point is a great compromise between the quieter Sea Point and the livelier CBD areas.

Located between the two, Green Point provides good access to both the central part of the city and to the more beachside areas.

It is also home to the Cape Town stadium, making it a convenient location if you are in town for a sporting event.

However, this could be a negative if you aren’t interested in sports. If there is an event on the area can become very crowded and noisy.

Green Point is similar to Sea Point in its abundance of green spaces. There is a large park, jogging trails, a hedge maze, and a biodiversity garden all within the neighborhood.

This makes it another great choice for those who enjoy outdoor activities.

It also has a similar relaxed, residential feel to Sea Point, but with much closer access to the city for days when you want something a bit more exciting. Green Point provides an ideal interim solution between the two.

Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap is a neighborhood with a rich history that shows a different side of Cape Town.

The area is full of colorful houses dating back to the 1700s.

This style of architecture is a wonderful, authentic take on old Cape Town. The residents of these houses are largely descendants of freed slaves from a range of cultural backgrounds.

This gives the area great diversity in culture, food, and history. In fact, the area is famous for its variety of Cape Malay cuisine.

There is also a museum displaying the history of early immigrants and the contributions they made.

While it is not the most central district, it is very distinct and significant to Cape Town’s history and culture.

Bo-Kaap is considered less safe than some of the other areas, an important aspect to consider when choosing where to stay in Cape Town.

However, if you are interested in history and the multicultural aspect of Cape Town, this may be the place for you.

Gardens

Gardens is located on the other side of the CBD, closer to Lions Head and Table Mountain.

This is great for those more interested in hiking or who wish to spend multiple days exploring the Lions Head/Table Mountain area.

It is also home to Kloof Street, one of the most popular main streets in town.

There are a number of cafes, shops, and restaurants along this street and it is always busy, making it quite safe.

If your accommodation is located too far from Kloof Street, it is important to stay cautious when going out, especially after dark, but overall Gardens is considered a mostly safe area.

It is middle to upper class and has a great mix of relaxed and vibrant atmosphere.

This makes it ideal for most types of travelers. The proximity to Lions Head is also a large advantage, as it is considered one of the most scenic hikes to experience.

There are also a number of picturesque parks located in the area.

Clifton

Clifton is one of the best areas to stay for beach-lovers with its variety of beaches.

There are four different beaches just within the Clifton area. Each of these beaches has a different atmosphere and draws a different crowd, meaning you can visit the various beaches without it becoming repetitive.

From the beach with the largest swell, aimed mostly at surfers, to the beach with the gentlest waves, aimed mostly at families, there is something for everyone.

There are great beach facilities available and the sea breeze makes even the nights perfect for a beach holiday.

This is naturally a busy neighborhood for both tourists and locals, so if you’re hoping to avoid people, this is possibly not the best choice.

However, it shouldn’t be more crowded than most popular beaches around the world and for the opportunity to experience some of the best beaches in the world, it is definitely worth it.

Camps Bay

Camps Bay is one of the most scenic and picturesque areas in Cape Town with views of striking mountain ranges and beautiful beaches.

This area has the best view of the Twelve Apostles mountain range, while also being close to the Atlantic Seaboard.

It is within walking distance to the beach, making it great for regular beach visits.

However, it doesn’t have the best access to the rest of the city, meaning it is likely you will have to drive or use Uber to travel to other parts of Cape Town.

This aspect could also be a positive as it allows the area to have a relaxing getaway atmosphere, rather than feeling like you’re in a major city. The area is considered very safe from crime.

There is some possibility of it becoming very crowded during the summer months (Nov – Jan) which could lead to road congestion and increased travel times to other parts of the city.

However, for some of the best views in Cape Town, Camps Bay can’t be beaten.
