Greatly enjoyed this story
cekadah3 December 2018
I don't understand the tidal wave of negative reviews on this film. In my opinion the story is quite simple.

It's a 24 hour look at a woman who (do to a medical complication) is told her life will end soon. The odds of surviving surgery are very low. So she becomes intensely aware of the life round her - something she had obviously taken lightly previously.

In other words she is absorbing into her mind many things that before had been just an nuisance in her life and she is realizing this is also part of life.

SJP does this role with perfection.

Not for all people
oso-caro21 February 2019
I really like this movie, is a melancholic movie, sad, and reflective it is slow, and it could have different readigns, it reflects in a stressful way what the lead character is going through I understood what Sarah Jessica Parker whas trying to communicate, because all the movie is run by her and the way she expresses emotions. Could be that you have to be in a certain place in life to understand this movie and feel connected to the character. I like it, is not a movie for entertainment, is a movie to reflect. There were a lots of cliches of artistic movies, but that is fine with me.

A day in the life of a performer who gets unsettling news.
TxMike29 May 2019
My wife and I watched this at home on DVD from our public library.

This movie has received a number of very bad reviews and very low ratings, which are NOT deserved at all. It in fact is a very good movie to do what it sets out to do. It is a character study of a female singer who seems a bit past her prime, then gets some very upsetting health news. The movie follows her for almost 24 hours, interacting with family and friends, reluctant to tell any of them what is going on.

One will like this movie if they are a Sarah Jessica Parker fan, who now is in her early 50s. She plays Vivienne, a professional singer. Divorced, she has a 16-yr-old daughter who lives with Viv's ex-husband. The movie is not dynamic, in fact often there are reasonably long pauses, we are supposed to identify with the terror that surely must be going through her mind.

We only hear her sing a couple of times, quiet nondescript songs. I was surprised when I looked at her bio and found she had a lot of early musical theater experience, even playing the lead in Annie at one point. So she is probably a better singer than is shown in this movie.

Handled with Care

There is a certain grace at how the film flows. A series of moments that drag into eachother, it attempts to depict what it may feel like to be in the shoes of someone who's just learned they may lose their health significantly & devastatingly. It's slow, disjointed, awkward: not that fun to watch. This is the point.

Waste of time
Angelika-d-96-64586011 November 2018
This was probably the most boring movie I have ever watched. I finished it on fast forward. SJP acting was mediocre, her singing was very bad, and the plot was extremely slow. Most of the movie is just SJP walking around saying and doing nothing .

This is an film about a woman who wants to get some closure and tie up loose ends in one day. It portrays a lot of unsaid emotions.

Not for everyone

The movie is made in a particular style. I would probably behave in the same as SJP if i am told I have a good probability of having a malignant brain tumor. The movie perfectly captures the emotions of person who realises that they have been selfish all their lives and now need seek support from them. SJP does an excellent job in capturing those emotions. Worth a watch.

A Singer??????
tenore6515 February 2021
I see many, many very bad reviews here. But there were some really good aspects, at least for me. I think the main problem was that this woman was supposed to be an internationally renowned singer, and I'm sorry, but she just did not have that type of voice. She had the type of voice, at best, that one might hear at a karioke bar, but hardly a renowned voice. It could have worked had she not sung that number at the club. That's what ruined the movie for me. But as a story, I found it interesting and think it could have worked had they just left that scene out, or perhaps dubbed the singing scene with a really great voice. I loved SJP in Sex and the City, but unfortunately have not seen her in anything else of merit.

Maybe she should just stick to producing, or just retire and enjoy all the money she made from that terrific show. And to tell the truth, she is not aging well, to put it mildly.

Very Disappointing
diogenes-858-44916710 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen Sarah Jessica Parker do some good work. Unfortunately, Blue Night doesn't qualify. The, ahem, stars of this movie suffer the fate that great empires suffer in their decline. They fall victim to indulging their own comfort and importance, while ignoring the effort and craft that first brought them success. The five lead actors, JSP, Zellweger, Baker, Bisset, Kinney in Blue Night set a weak tone for eachother (props to Bisset for trying) and everything else that follows. In what should be a gripping, gritty emotionally tense drama these high profile performers lack anything near the craft to do the job.

Sarah Jessica Parker is Carrie Bradshaw, still. Flung into a story well out of her emotional depth, SJP is supposed to be feted New York singer, Vivienne, who discovers she has a terminal brain tumor. You know what the emotional hook of this drama is, for us the viewer? That she doesn't tell anyone. But that doesn't stop everyone she encounters from being infected with the ennui of her reaction to her situation. I can only imagine director, Fabian Constant, previously a TV movie documentary director, didn't have a clue about how the story and performances were coming off the screen.

And, even in our suspending disbelief, the gulf between Ms Jessica Parker as a career singer and a laudable singing artist, is laughable. Even weird, eclectic New York wouldn't bother with her performance for a minute. While the plot makes an effort to achieve something, the storyline trails weakly along until I gave up expecting anything good. There are so many soulful pauses between characters we care little or nothing about, it is about as stimulating as warm milk before bedtime.

In the hands of an actress who has built skills based on dedication to her craft, like Meryl Streep or Annette Bening, this would have been a tour de force. In the hands of a TV and Movie star who, when faced with the dramatic arc and challenges of her character, and a weak director, falls back on girly schtick that made her broadly popular on TV, it is pap. Blue Night ends up an animated Hall Mark card with disproportionately decent production values. Having said that, undemanding Sarah Jessica Parker fans will love it. They may even think it's good for them as an excuse for another night on the couch with that tub of Ben and Jerry's.

No Happy Ending...
sylk19737 March 2019
Is this why viewers are disappointed? No happy ending? This movie has so much more to offer than just some silly love story. It is about life, all good and bad, all its flaws and imperfections, about struggles and battles we endure every day. It is truly a masterpiece. Fantastic performance by Sarah Jessica Parker. She is so uniquely talented and not a bad singer either. Love the eyes. Two thumbs up.

A continental style SJP movie in NYC
phd_travel10 February 2019
I'll watch anything SJP does in NYC and this meandering Continental style movie has interesting details if you give it a chance.

A jazz singer musician gets a diagnosis of brain tumor and goes around the city. Along the way she sings in a club has her younger lover, sees her daughter who lives with her ex meets a strange Lyft driver and lots more.

Different from her usual comedy drama roles she does stretch her usual type of performance.

Ok for one watch.

This movie had a good cast , but that is the only good thing I can say about it, It is just dull , tedious , boring . I stuck with it until the end, but was sorely tempted to give up on it by the half way mark.

Fantastic crew, but poorly done movie. The story is just getting lost, not produced well at all. It's really waste of time. Still can't believe that the movie was this bad.

Let down much?
omekiawhitney13 November 2018
Omg I want the time I spent watching this "movie", if you can call it that, back. It was such a waste and it ended with no conclusion... NONE! She wandered around the city aimlessly(felt like it) and had on the same outfit for 98% of the movie. I very seldom review movies, but after watching this one I had to. Smh, just pass on it and watch something not this. #theworst

The only good thing in this movie were SJP's high-heeled, ankle-strap shoes. The end.

Painfully slow
alwaysgabbie11 November 2018
Never a slower moving movie has there been. You keep watching and waiting for something, anything to happen, but nothing ever does. The Lyft driver was the only interesting character (he was also nice to look at). I'm a Sarah Jessica Parker fan, so I'll see any production that she's in. This just wasn't a good movie. I'm not sure any actor could make this movie enjoyable. And who let that wig happen???

I Watched it Anyway
Moviegoer1925 November 2018
This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a while... I gave it 3 stars for the use of Manhattan as a character, with several effective visually captivating shots of it. The human characters in this film were not so effective. The theme of the movie, a person learning of a potentially terminal illness becomes aware of her life in an almost surrealistically heightened way and sets out to either compensate for what she wishes she had done, and/or make the most of what might be her final hours. In this film, however, the character played by SJ Parker, Vivienne, is so self-absorbed that even on this important day before going for further testing (she's not even dying - yet) she continues to stand people up, keep them waiting, barge in on them, and basically do whatever the hell she wants, no matter how it impacts on anyone else. At one point she goes to a jazz club and sings, as she's a singer. Personally, her voice doesn't do it for me (and during the rolling of the credits there's a voiceover of her singing "I Think We're Alone Now" which was so bad I turned it off in disgust). Other characters in it are there just because... such as a friend of Viv's played by Renee Zellweger; it's hard to know whether it was the way the character was written or the way Zellweger played it that made the character more of a caricature. The Lyft driver started out being another self-absorbed creep, but then was somehow transformed into somehow being Viv's rescuer. Whatever they were aiming for, well, it didn't quite get there. Overall, this is so for the whole film. It was too much of a vague mixture of nothing much.

Horrible

Two hours inside someone's tragic depressed brain is no way to spend two hours. Plus, she was supposed to be a world class singer and SJP cannot sing.

Can I have those 90Minutes back
goldilocks-9899613 November 2018
Most bizarre film I've ever wasted 90 minutes on. I love SJP so was drawn to the movie because of her ... disappointed doesn't cover it .. maybe just me but I just didn't get it .. 90 minutes of her walking around, half finished conversations and very poor singing.

I was so eager to watch this movie and I wish I hadn't. Complete waste of so much talent considering the brilliant cast. The movie just leaves you with nothing. When the credits started rolling I was so annoyed.

no energy
SnoopyStyle31 May 2021
Vivienne Carala (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a singer in NYC. It's a day in her life. The movie starts with her receiving a brain tumor diagnosis. She has an important upcoming performance and a doctor's appointment the next day.

I like that Sarah Jessica Parker is trying to do something serious. I don't mind the faux realism. I just want the story to do something. I want her to do something. There is a coldness and dullness to everything. SJP needs to explode her performance but she's doing only one tone. She needs to bring some more energy despite the character's reticent to show it. There is plenty of firepower in the cast. I didn't even notice Renée Zellweger at first when she shows up. On the other hand, the Lyft driver is very manufactured. The writing needs to inject some drama and power. It could give her a ticking clock. Maybe she could make up a list of people to see. In the end, it's the filmmaker who fails most here. I don't know what the guy did other than simply point the camera and shoot. There are some extreme closeups but it's very straight forward. There is no energy and no power to the filmmaking. It just lays there.

Disappointing!!
junitunes-9522217 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was looking for a movie to watch. I stumbled on Here and Now.The actors drew my interest. The beginning seemed interesting and it began to drag on. If I found out I was terminally ill with a brain tumor, well I feel the character's reaction just seemed unreal...that's me. I would like to add JSP portrayed this incredible character as a jazz singer...She follows a really great jazz singer. JSP gets up on stage and she began to sing what sounded as a Disney childish sounding song not the lyrics. She would have better of not singing all. That really was unrealistic and disappointing. I don't recommend this movie at all!!!
