Bleach is a solid anime that is definitely worth watching. When I was first introduced to this series, I had no idea what the show was about. The only thing I knew was that the title was called "Bleach" and the main protagonist had orange hair. I quickly discovered that Bleach was an excellent anime that started out strong, and continued to exceed my expectations as the show progressed.
Since this is a spoiler-free review, I'll break this down using the Crunchy-roll review categories:
Storyline: 3.5 stars - This may be a bit harsh because the main storyline of Bleach and/or the story that directly reflects the manga is superb, however, shortly after Bleach catches it's stride, filler begins to seep in and dilute the overall pacing of the anime. Anyone who marathons the episodes back-to-back will clearly see when this takes place because things begin to make less sense, characters act out of context, and, as I mentioned earlier, pacing slows to a crawl. The first filler arc initially caused me to take a "Bleach Break" because I just couldn't sit through it anymore. Again, the story as adapted directly from the manga is 5 out of 5, but with the filler dispersed within the anime I rate the overall storyline 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Music: - 3.5 stars - The music starts out solid, unique, and different with an edgy "hipness" at the beginning of the series. Later on, there are some less desirable tunes added that continue to be used over and over again which detracted from my initial enjoyment of the music. The tunes are above average, but can be somewhat repetitive.
Characters: - 5 stars - The characters in Bleach make this anime soar above most others. From the main protagonist, to side characters, family members, villains, and beyond, Bleach rocks this department beyond belief. The character designs in Bleach are arguably some of the coolest looking/designed characters you will ever encounter in modern anime.
Animation: - 5 stars - The animation in Bleach is beautiful. The series started out in 2004 so the anime started out with a fresh modern style, but continues to push the boundaries of a weekly shonen style anime. Bleach truly shines when the major story arcs and fight scenes take place.
Overall: - 4 stars - Bleach is an anime that any fan of the genre can enjoy. Even jaded individuals who don't care for the long running shonen style anime can find things to enjoy in this series. The filler can destroy the series momentum, quite harshly, but the first painful filler arc can be skipped altogether without missing any key story points. The character designs and the animation are so superb, you could watch Bleach on mute and still find a way to garner entertainment as an anime fan. Anyone who hasn't tried the series should seriously consider watching the first 20 episodes before passing judgment.
