Hollywood Cadets: Black-Foxe Military Institute 1929-1968 Paperback – June 16, 2014

Black-Foxe Military Institute was part of the Hollywood scene from its founding in 1929 until its closure in 1968. Over the course of its short history, sons of many Hollywood personalities attended the school, where they and other cadets, most, but not all, from well-to-do families, received a an excellent education. This short volume attempts to capture the essence of Black-Foxe through the years with historical notes, anecdotes, and photographs. Readers are given the opportunity to learn about what is perhaps a forgotten part of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Patrick Ian O'Donnell, born and raised in Los Angeles, enjoyed a varied career including teacher, university administrator, resort operator, and principal of a registered investment advisory firm. A life-long mystery buff, upon retirement he began writing his Oxnard mystery series.

When Phil Oxnard retired from the publishing business, he was afraid boredom would ensue. Soon after moving into a new home in San Juan Capistrano, circumstance developed that would keep boredom at bay for the next decade or two. He would, with the begrudging but essential assistance of his wife, Paula, become Phil Oxnard, Geezer Detective. His first case, Ortega Night, found him proving the supposed accidental death of a neighbor was, in fact, murder. The case that followed, McCollum's Run, finds Phil-- now employed by the G.P. Golden detective agency--in the Sierra Nevada, along with Paula, faced with a missing teenager and a murdered lodge employee. By the third story, Of Doggerel and the Dean, Phil has established his own detective agency and is immediately called upon to assist the police in solving a murder at Garwood College where Paula, a retired inner city principal, is a guest lecturer. In the most recent Oxnard mystery, A Wrathful Vintage, the Oxnards investigate the background of a murdered vineyard manager and are able to provide the police with information that leads to an arrest for murder.

In addition to the Oxnard series, the crime novels, Illicit Cargo, Death of an Oysterman, Final Words, and Cold Case Closure, written with co-author Chuck Gaylor, round out the O'Donnell novels to date.

Black Foxe was a happening just like this book. If you went to school there or lived in Hollywood during this time. And dated or hung out with students from black foxe, Harvard or Brentwood military academies. Black fox closest stores Harvard and Brentwood became non-military schools and survived.

An absolute “must read” for anyone who has attended Black Foxe Military Institute. Black Foxe was so much more than just a school; it was truly a character building experience. I am a graduate of the class of 1964 and can attest to the fact that Patrick’s book will bring your mind back to those “good old days” at Black Foxe. Thank you Patrick O’Donnell for keeping the Black Foxe spirit alive.

Certainly a historical resource for anyone who went to Black-Foxe. My father went there for the swim coaching which led him to be a 3 time All American swimmer in the late 40's. I was delighted to find the book.

As a former cadet, (and a contemporary of the author) it brought back a lot of memories--most of them good!

Love reading about yesteryear. All the people were made real by the authors narration.

My Grandfather was Earle Foxe, who gave up his acting career to become part of Black Foxe. My father, Chester Foxe attended through high school, then into the Army when WWII broke out. I heard lots of stories, and wish I had asked more questions when both were alive. The book should be an interesting read. I still have Black Foxe memorabilia around the house. Some of Earle's movies are now on DVD. Fun to see my grandfather when he was in his 20's and 30's.
