‘Cocaine Bear’ No. 1 on April Disc Sales Chart; ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Takes Over Top Spot for 2023

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s Cocaine Bear debuted at No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for April 2023, according to Circana’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions.

The comedic take on horror films is based on a real incident and involves a bear in the Georgia woods that gets addicted to cocaine jettisoned by drug smugglers, and goes on a rampage in search of more. It earned $64.4 million at the domestic box office and arrived on Blu-ray and DVD April 18.

No. 2 in April was the Lionsgate actioner Plane, starring Gerard Butler as a commercial airline pilot who must team with a ruthless criminal to rescue his passengers after they crash land in a hostile country. It arrived on disc at the end of March, where it was No. 12 for that month, and proceeded to top the sales charts for three consecutive weeks before being upended by Cocaine Bear. It grossed $32.1 million at U.S. theaters.

The top seller for March, Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, slid to No. 3 in April. The DreamWorks Animation sequel, in which the swashbuckling kitty from the “Shrek” movies seeks a magical wish to restore his nine lives, arrived on disc at the end of February and remained a relatively strong seller.

April’s No. 4 seller was Lionsgate’s Jesus Revolution, which arrived on disc toward the end of the month on April 25. The film, about the revival of a church in the 1970s, earned $52.1 million at the domestic box office.

The No. 5 seller in April was Universal Pictures’ creepy robotic doll thriller M3GAN, which had been No. 5 in March as well after arriving on Blu-ray and DVD March 21.

The only other new release in the monthly top 10 for April was Warner’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance, an April 18 disc release. The film continues the trilogy starring Channing Tatum as the title stripper.

On the year-to-date chart, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever moved into the top spot, displacing Warner’s Black Adam, after securing the No. 9 spot for April.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish climbed to No. 3 for the year, pushing Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick to No. 4.

Sony Pictures’ A Man Called Otto remained No. 5 for the year, while Crunchyroll’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero moved up a spot to No. 6.

Best Picture Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once climbed a spot to No. 7, while Universal’s Violent Night was down three spots to No. 9.

New to the year-to-date top 10 were M3GAN, which rose four spots to No. 8, and Plane, which grabbed the No. 10 spot having been No. 42 following its brief run in March.

That pushed the original 1986 Top Gun and Universal’s Halloween Ends out of the No. 10.
