THEIR CHOICE. THE IMAGE IN THE MIND OF LONG TIME STEELER FANS WHEN IT COMES TO BILL COWHER IS PROBABLY A LITTLE MORE INTENSE WITH A LOT MORE CHIN THAN WHAT GRADUATES HERE AT DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY WILL EXPERIENCE. BUT THE UNIVERSITY HOPES IT’S KAUR’S MESSAGE THAT WILL LEAVE A LASTING IMPACT ON THESE STUDENTS. LEGENDARY STEELERS COACH BILL COWBOY IS HEADING BACK TO PITTSBURGH. DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY HONORING POWER WITH AN HONORARY DEGREE. BUT THE LOCAL LEGEND ALSO SET TO DELIVER THE COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS. WE LOOK FOR PEOPLE WHO REALLY REPRESENT THE SPIRIT OF DUQUESNE, AND IT’S SOMEONE THAT WE WANT TO BE MODELS FOR OUR STUDENT GRADUATES. DUQUESNE PRESIDENT KEN GORMLEY SAYS HE FIRST MET COWHER IN 2018 AT A MEMORIAL FOR DUQUESNE ALUM AND STEELERS OWNER DAN ROONEY. NOT LONG AFTER, GORMLEY SAYS THE UNIVERSITY ACTUALLY PLANNED TO BRING COWHER IN. WE ASKED HIM. HE ACCEPTED, AND THEN COVID HIT AND IT THREW US OFF. IN THE MEANTIME, HE WAS INDUCTED IN THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME. SO, YOU KNOW, IT WAS IT WAS GOOD TIMING THAT WE ASKED BEFORE HE GOT EVEN MORE FAMOUS, BECAUSE DAD ALSO WENT TO DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY HOLDING A SPECIAL PLACE IN HIS HEART. GORMLEY SAYS HE’S ALREADY HEARD FROM STUDENTS AND PARENTS EXCITED ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE ONE OF PITTSBURGH’S OWN BACK HOME. I’VE SAID TO HIM THAT GETTING AN HONORARY DEGREE AT DUQUESNE IS AN EVEN BIGGER HONOR THAN THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME. BUT THAT’S FOR HIM TO DECIDE. NOW, ALONG WITH COWHER, DUQUESNE, A LONG BOARD MEMBER AND PHILANTHROPIST, CATHERINE RYAN, IS ALSO SET TO BE HONORED BY THE UNIVERSITY DURING COMMENCEMENT, WHICH IS SCHEDULED FOR MAY 5TH.
