"Bigga Than Ben" is a quirky story about two guy pals, sort of a "road picture" for the present generation. I loved the film. It is never boring: it never lets up. Ben Barnes is an extremely under-rated actor. Take a chance on this one.
I brought this movie years ago (only because of Ben Barnes really!) and still to this day I find it hilarious, written/directed well and with a great cast. Sad though that talented actors like Ben and others do not receive deserved credit where it's due, nevertheless this is a must see :)
Amazon, this isn't the full movie. You're selling just the trailer for $10. That's why the movie length says just 1 minute. All of your other digital sales show the actual length of the movie. Check your system.
Just in case anyone's in any doubt - this is not a film to learn English by. Or how to be PC. If you want to laugh on the other hand... Two Russians come to London intent on ripping the place off - first legitimately, then by any and all means necessary. Like all travelers who come to the lovely UK, they're unprepared for the weather, the sheer expense and especially as regards London - the mass disinterest in their plight. God knows how but our two Russian heroes, in spite of being racist opportunists, soon learn that the only people who can help them are those who live outside the system like themselves. Unlike most London based films, there are no Oxo tower shots or posh people in wheelchairs. The normally clean-cut Ben Barnes and his sidekick Chadov are a great pair who slowly win you over to the point where you feel sorry for them. Nothing goes as planned, but still they persevere even when all the odds are stacked up against them. Fast-paced, very funny, this is a beautifully shot look at the very ugly underbelly of London that most of the tourists (or city-dwellers) never see.
This is a fantastic debut from the very talented writer/director Suzie Halewood. The film charts the spiritual journey undertaken by two Russian immigrants, Spiker (Andrei Chadov) and Cobakka (Ben Barnes), who come to London to dodge the draft and fill their pockets. Barnes, in what is undoubtedly his best role to date, gives an outstanding performance and the pairing with talented Russian actor, Andrei Chadov makes for one of the best double acts since `Withnail and I'. The film shows a side of London rarely seen and combines poignant drama with some hilarious comedy. Definitely a must-see DVD!
From all the critiques I've read, I really thought the movie would be barely a one-star film. But, no, no, it's not bad at all.
The setting, scenery and costumes are stunning. Yes, the plot was changed and *rapid intake of breath* "modernized". But for me, movies should not be compared to books anyway. Books stand on their own merit as do movies. So if you take Oscar Wilde's revelant story as a mere outline for this movie adaptation, you'll appreciate what the director and screenwriter tried to do. They tried to make the story ring valid for a contemporary, younger audience in love with gothic tales.
Dorian is still Dorian and played quite well by Ben Barnes, I must add, especially in the latter half when Dorian returns 25 years older. He still makes the same Faustian pact. He still indulges in every debauchery available at that time. But, there's a sadness and a hint of an abused childhood backstory that may validate his willingness to make a pact. There's also the written return of him into the same society, 25 years later. That's when the movie really picked up for me.
I am glad I purchased it. It's well worth a viewing of how a classic story can be turned into something that resonates with a modern audience. Was it successful in it's approach? Not entirely, but it came close.
