Joe Turner had one of the great 50-year careers. Beginning as a blues shouter in the '30s with his partner, pianist Pete Johnson, in Kansas City bars, he recorded often in a variety of contexts: as a duo with Johnson, with honking jump-blues bands, in front of small combos in the rock & roll era, with jazz and blues groups until close to his death in 1985. Capable of handling a huge range of material from 12-bar hollers to pop ballads, Turner easily fills this three-CD set with his vast depth and humor. --Rickey Wright

B-sides omitted are: I Got Love For Sale b/o My Gal's A Jockey in August 1946; Adam Bit The Apple b/o Still In The Dark in March 1950; After My Laughter Came Tears b/o Chains Of Love in summer 1951; I'll Never Stop Loving You b/o Sweet Sixteen in April 1952; Poor Lovewr's Blues b/o Don't You Cry in August 1952; A World Of Trouble b/o Love Roller Coaster n September 1957; and Blues In The Night b/o Jump For Joy in May 1958. They also chose not to include the new version of his 1953 # 1 R&B Honey Hush which, in late 1959/early 1960 became his last charter when it reached # 53 Pop Hot 100 on Atlantic 2044, as well as that B-side, Tomorrow Night.
Joe Turner was at the forefront of those now considered to have paved the way for R&R and he extended that right on into the early years of the enduring genre with some of the best hits of the era. All that kept him from being as popular with the young generation as, say, Little Richard and Chuck Berry was that, while they were 23 and 29 respectively when R&R kicked into high gear in 1955, he was already 44 and with a girth that earned him the nickname Big Joe. Hardly the prerequisites for becoming a teenage idol.
Still, it was his seminal 1954 # 1 R&B/# 22 Pop smash Shake, Rattle And Roll which sounded the clarion call for the coming genre, spending three weeks at # 1 and hanging around on the R&B charts for 32 solid weeks, when a watered-down (lyrically-speaking) cover for the white audience came out on Decca by Bill Haley & His Comets (# 7 Pop).
Big Joe Turner passed away at age 74 on November 24, 1985. For his contributions he was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame in 1983 followed by the R&R Hall Of Fame in 1987.
Just a magnificent compilation of one of the all-time greats which would have been made ever better with the inclusion of that first hit, as well as the missing flipsides, in place of some lesser material.
