He was described as the "Rabindranath Tagore of Modern India who has been one of the finest novelists-activists since independence"by Ramachandra Guha. He was the third person among eight recipients of Jnanpith Award for Kannada the highest literary honour conferred by the Govt. of India.
Shivaram Karanth was born on 10 October 1902, in Kota near Udupi in the Udupi district of Karnataka to a Kannada family.He was influenced by Gandhi's principles and took part in Indian Independence movement while he was in college. He did not complete his education and went to participate in the Non-cooperation movement and canvassed for khadi and swadeshi for five years up to 1927. By that time Karanth had already started writing fiction-detective novels, to begin with as well as plays.
Karanth was an intellectual and environmentalist who tremendously contributed to art and culture of Karnataka. He is considered one of the greatest novelist in Kannada. Apart from his 47 novels, he also wrote 31 plays, four short stories, six books of essays and sketches, thirteen books on art, 2 volumes of poems, 9 encyclopedias, and 100+ of articles on various issues and subjects, including a history of world art in Kannada and a work on Chalukyan sculpture and architecture, a standard treatise on the Yakshagana (with which dramatic form, his name is identified), a three volume book of knowledge for children, a four volume encyclopedia on science for grown ups, 240 children's books, six books on travel, two books on birds, three Travelogues, an autobiography.
He has received several literary awards,.Namely, Jnanpith Award, Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Academy award and Pampa Award.
He passed away on 9th December 1997 in Manipal, Karnataka.

ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ - ಪುಸ್ತಕಾನುಭವ

ಮೊನ್ನೆ ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರ "ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ" ಜೀವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಅವರ ಎರೆಡನೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ(ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು "ಮೂಕಜ್ಜಿಯ ಕನಸು"). ಚಿಗುರಿದ ಕನಸು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಟಿ.ವಿ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಅದನ್ನು ಓದುವ ಕುತೂಹಲ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಘನವಾಗದೆ, ಕೈಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಅದರ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದದೆ ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟೆ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ ಶೀರ್ಶೆಕೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಶಿಸಿದ್ದು "ಬೆಟ್ಟ" ಎಂಬ ನಿಸರ್ಗ ಸೂಚಿ ಪದ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಯಾದ ನನ್ನನ್ನು, ನನ್ನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕರಾಶಿಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯೆ, ಬೃಹತ್ ಕಾಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನೂ ಹಿಂದಿಕ್ಕಿ ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇದರೊಳಗಿರಬಹುದಾದ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಹಸಿರಿನ ಶೀತಲ ನಿರ್ಮಲ ಕಂಪು. "ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ" ಹೆಸರೇ ಸೂಚಿಸಿರುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಇದು ವಿಶಾಲ ಅರಣ್ಯದ ನೀಳಬಾಹುವಿನ ಆಲಿಂಗನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ "ಬೆಟ್ಟ"ವೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲಸಿ, ಹೊರಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಕಂಡರೂ ಕಾಣದಹಾಗೆ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಸಾಹಸಮಯ ಬಾಳ್ವೆ ನೆಡೆಸಿದ ಮಾನವ "ಜೀವ"ವೊಂದರ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಕಥೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕರ್ತೃ ತಾವೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಒಂದು ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿ(ಶಿವರಾಮ), ತಮಗೊದಗಿದ ಜೀವನಾನುಭವವನು ಪ್ರಥಮಪುರುಷ ನಿರೂಪಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಉಣಿಸುವ ಬಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹಿತವೆನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ ಓದುಗ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯದ ನಂತರ ತಾನೆ "ಶಿವರಾಮ" ನಾಗಿ ಕಥಾವಾಹಿನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾಗಿ, ತನ್ನೆದುರಿನ ಹೊಸ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಆಂತರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಭವಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ಆಪ್ತವಾಗಿ, ಸರಳವಾಗಿ, ಮೃದುಲವಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ 'ಪ್ರಥಮಪುರುಷ' ನೀರೂಪಣೆ ತನ್ನ ನೈಜತೆಯನ್ನು ಮೆರೆದಿದೆ.
ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದು "ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ" ಪಾತ್ರ. ಕಥೆಯ ಪಾತ್ರಚಿತ್ರಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಪ್ರಭುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ಓದುವ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ್ನೆದುರಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಅಂತರಂಗ, ಚಾರಿತ್ರ್ಯ, ಧ್ಯೇಯ, ಆಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆ, ದುಗುಡ , ಸಂತಸ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಸ್ವವನ್ನು ತೆರೆದಿಡುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನೇ "ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ". ಕಥೆಯ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿನಿಷ್ಠ ಸ್ವರೂಪದ್ದೆಂದು ಓದಿನ ಅರ್ಧಭಾದಲ್ಲೇ ತಿಳಿದುಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಜೊತೆ ಅದರ ವೇಗದಲ್ಲೇ ಎಳೆಯುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ಲೋಕ. ಇದರ ನಂತರವೆ ಇತರ ಪಾತ್ರವರ್ಗಗಳ ಸ್ವರೂಪ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನೊಳಗೆ ಇಳಿಯಲೆತ್ನಿಸುವುದು. ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಓರ್ವ ಕೃಷಿಕ, ಶ್ರಮಜೀವಿ, ಸಾಹಸಿ. ಹಿರಿಕರಿಂದ ಬಂದ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯವಸಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಸಾಗಿಸುವಾಗ, ಶಂಕರಿ ಸಹಬಾಳ್ವೆಯಾಗಿ ಇವರ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಎರೆಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳಾದರೂ ಅವರ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಬದುಕು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಗಳು ಹೆರುವಾಗ ಅಸುನೀಗಿದರೆ, ಮಗ ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಪೇಟೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರಳಿ ಎಂದೂ ಬಾರದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮಗನಿಂದ ದೂರಾಗಿ ವರುಷಗಳು ಕಳೆದರೂ, ಅವನ ಬರುವಿಕೆಯ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ವೃದ್ಧದಂಪತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನು ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಹೋದ ಕಾರ್‍ಅಣಗಳನ್ನು ಊಹಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವ ಕನಸನ್ನು ಕಾಣುತ್ತ, ಒಳಗಿರುವ ತಲ್ಲಣಗಳನ್ನು ಸುತ್ತಲಿರುವ ಜನರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಭಾರವನ್ನು ಇಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಬಗೆಯನ್ನು ಕಥೆ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ತೆರೆದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಶಂಕರಿಗೆ ಮನೋಸ್ಥ್ಯೆರ್ಯವನ್ನು ತುಂಬುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಜೀವನಧೈರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಗನಿಲ್ಲದಿರುವ ದುಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ, ನಾರ್‍ಆಯಣನೆಂಬ ಅನಾಥನಿಗೆ ಮಗನಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಉದಾರ ಜೀವಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ. ಕಾಟುಮೂಲೆಯಂತ ಕಗ್ಗಾಡನ್ನು ಕಡಿದು, ಬಳಿಯಿರುವ ನೀರಿನ ಸೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯವಸಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಒಡ್ಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ಕಷ್ಟ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲೂ ಕೃಷಿಬೆಳೆಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವ ಸಾಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಾಹಸಿ. ಕಾಡನ್ನು ವ್ಯವಸಾಯ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಗೋಪಾ���ಯ್ಯನ ಸಾಹಸ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಎಂತವರ ಹೃದಯವನ್ನು ಹುರಿದುಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ಪರಿಚಯವಿಲ್ಲದ ಅತಿಥಿಯಾದ ಶಿವರಾಮನನ್ನು, ಪಕ್ಕದ ತೋಟದ ದೇರಣ್ಣಗೌಡನನ್ನು, ಆಳು ಬಟ್ಯನನ್ನು ಆದರದಿಂದ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆಯಿಂದ ಕಾಣುವ ರೀತಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಸೌಜನ್ಯತೆ ಸಜ್ಜನತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಓದುಗನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಓರ್ವ ಧೀಮಂತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಓದುಗನಿಗೆ ಉಲ್ಲಾಸವನ್ನು, ಸೋಜಿಗವನ್ನು ಉಣಬಡಿಸುವುದು , ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಘಟ್ಟದ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಸಂಪತ್ತು. ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಅರಣ್ಯ, ಕುಮಾರಪರ್ವತ ಹಾಗು ಇತರೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ವಿವರಣೆ, ಆ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳ ಹೊಲಗದ್ದೆಗಳಿಗೆ ನುಗ್ಗುವ ಆನೆ, ಕಾಟಿ, ಕಾಡುಹಂದಿಗಳ ದಾಂಧಲೆ, ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜೀವನಾಡಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ನದಿ ಕೆರೆಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯ ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆ ಹಳೆಯ ಕಾಲದ ಕಾಡಿನಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆ ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಪಾತ್ರದಂತೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಉಳಿದ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಬೆಳೆದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾಂದ್ರತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವ ಅವಕಾಶವಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಅನಿಸಿದ್ದು , ಇತರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ಸಹ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪುಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಕಥೆಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿವೈಶಾಲ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದು. ದೇರಣ್ಣ ಗೌಡ, ಬಟ್ಯರು ಬಂದೂ ಬಾರದ ಹಾಗೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಹಿನಿಯಿಂದ ಮರೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಾರ್‍ಆಯಣನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಆಗುಹೋಗುಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ಕಥೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕೊಂಚ ಇಣುಕಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಿವರಾಮನ ಕೇವಲ ಒಬ್ಬ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕನಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆಯೇ ಹೊರತೂ ಘನ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಕಥೆಯ ಅಂತರಂಗದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬೆಸೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಕಥೆಯು ತನ್ನ ಮಿಡಿತವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕವೆ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ಈ ಪಾತ್ರ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಲಿತು, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅರಳಿ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂವೇದಿಸುತ್ತ ಅದರ ಅಂತಸತ್ವವನ್ನರಿತು, ಅದನ್ನು ಪಳಗಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಅದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬೆಸೆದು ದೃಢವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ರೀತಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಸಾಹಸದ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಮುದ್ರೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಒತ್ತದೆ ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

"ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ" ಹೆಸರೇ ಸೂಚಿಸಿರುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಇದು ವಿಶಾಲ ಅರಣ್ಯದ ನೀಳಬಾಹುವಿನ ಆಲಿಂಗನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ "ಬೆಟ್ಟ"ವೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲಸಿ, ಹೊರಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಕಂಡರೂ ಕಾಣದಹಾಗೆ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಸಾಹಸಮಯ ಬಾಳ್ವೆ ನೆಡೆಸಿದ ಮಾನವ "ಜೀವ"ವೊಂದರ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಕಥೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕರ್ತೃ ತಾವೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಒಂದು ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿ(ಶಿವರಾಮ), ತಮಗೊದಗಿದ ಜೀವನಾನುಭವವನು ಪ್ರಥಮಪುರುಷ ನಿರೂಪಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಉಣಿಸುವ ಬಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹಿತವೆನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ ಓದುಗ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯದ ನಂತರ ತಾನೆ "ಶಿವರಾಮ" ನಾಗಿ ಕಥಾವಾಹಿನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾಗಿ, ತನ್ನೆದುರಿನ ಹೊಸ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಆಂತರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಭವಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ಆಪ್ತವಾಗಿ, ಸರಳವಾಗಿ, ಮೃದುಲವಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ 'ಪ್ರಥಮಪುರುಷ' ನೀರೂಪಣೆ ತನ್ನ ನೈಜತೆಯನ್ನು ಮೆರೆದಿದೆ.
ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದು "ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ" ಪಾತ್ರ. ಕಥೆಯ ಪಾತ್ರಚಿತ್ರಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಪ್ರಭುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ಓದುವ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ್ನೆದುರಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಅಂತರಂಗ, ಚಾರಿತ್ರ್ಯ, ಧ್ಯೇಯ, ಆಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆ, ದುಗುಡ , ಸಂತಸ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಸ್ವವನ್ನು ತೆರೆದಿಡುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನೇ "ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ". ಕಥೆಯ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿನಿಷ್ಠ ಸ್ವರೂಪದ್ದೆಂದು ಓದಿನ ಅರ್ಧಭಾದಲ್ಲೇ ತಿಳಿದುಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಜೊತೆ ಅದರ ವೇಗದಲ್ಲೇ ಎಳೆಯುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ಲೋಕ. ಇದರ ನಂತರವೆ ಇತರ ಪಾತ್ರವರ್ಗಗಳ ಸ್ವರೂಪ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನೊಳಗೆ ಇಳಿಯಲೆತ್ನಿಸುವುದು. ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಓರ್ವ ಕೃಷಿಕ, ಶ್ರಮಜೀವಿ, ಸಾಹಸಿ. ಹಿರಿಕರಿಂದ ಬಂದ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯವಸಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಸಾಗಿಸುವಾಗ, ಶಂಕರಿ ಸಹಬಾಳ್ವೆಯಾಗಿ ಇವರ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಎರೆಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳಾದರೂ ಅವರ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಬದುಕು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಗಳು ಹೆರುವಾಗ ಅಸುನೀಗಿದರೆ, ಮಗ ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಪೇಟೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರಳಿ ಎಂದೂ ಬಾರದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮಗನಿಂದ ದೂರಾಗಿ ವರುಷಗಳು ಕಳೆದರೂ, ಅವನ ಬರುವಿಕೆಯ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ವೃದ್ಧದಂಪತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನು ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಹೋದ ಕಾರ್‍ಅಣಗಳನ್ನು ಊಹಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವ ಕನಸನ್ನು ಕಾಣುತ್ತ, ಒಳಗಿರುವ ತಲ್ಲಣಗಳನ್ನು ಸುತ್ತಲಿರುವ ಜನರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಭಾರವನ್ನು ಇಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಬಗೆಯನ್ನು ಕಥೆ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ತೆರೆದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಶಂಕರಿಗೆ ಮನೋಸ್ಥ್ಯೆರ್ಯವನ್ನು ತುಂಬುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಜೀವನಧೈರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಗನಿಲ್ಲದಿರುವ ದುಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ, ನಾರ್‍ಆಯಣನೆಂಬ ಅನಾಥನಿಗೆ ಮಗನಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಉದಾರ ಜೀವಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ. ಕಾಟುಮೂಲೆಯಂತ ಕಗ್ಗಾಡನ್ನು ಕಡಿದು, ಬಳಿಯಿರುವ ನೀರಿನ ಸೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯವಸಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಒಡ್ಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ಕಷ್ಟ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲೂ ಕೃಷಿಬೆಳೆಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವ ಸಾಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಾಹಸಿ. ಕಾಡನ್ನು ವ್ಯವಸಾಯ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಗೋಪಾ���ಯ್ಯನ ಸಾಹಸ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಎಂತವರ ಹೃದಯವನ್ನು ಹುರಿದುಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ಪರಿಚಯವಿಲ್ಲದ ಅತಿಥಿಯಾದ ಶಿವರಾಮನನ್ನು, ಪಕ್ಕದ ತೋಟದ ದೇರಣ್ಣಗೌಡನನ್ನು, ಆಳು ಬಟ್ಯನನ್ನು ಆದರದಿಂದ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆಯಿಂದ ಕಾಣುವ ರೀತಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಸೌಜನ್ಯತೆ ಸಜ್ಜನತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಓದುಗನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಓರ್ವ ಧೀಮಂತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಓದುಗನಿಗೆ ಉಲ್ಲಾಸವನ್ನು, ಸೋಜಿಗವನ್ನು ಉಣಬಡಿಸುವುದು , ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಘಟ್ಟದ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಸಂಪತ್ತು. ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಅರಣ್ಯ, ಕುಮಾರಪರ್ವತ ಹಾಗು ಇತರೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ವಿವರಣೆ, ಆ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳ ಹೊಲಗದ್ದೆಗಳಿಗೆ ನುಗ್ಗುವ ಆನೆ, ಕಾಟಿ, ಕಾಡುಹಂದಿಗಳ ದಾಂಧಲೆ, ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜೀವನಾಡಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ನದಿ ಕೆರೆಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯ ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆ ಹಳೆಯ ಕಾಲದ ಕಾಡಿನಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆ ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಪಾತ್ರದಂತೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಉಳಿದ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಬೆಳೆದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾಂದ್ರತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವ ಅವಕಾಶವಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಅನಿಸಿದ್ದು , ಇತರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ಸಹ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪುಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಕಥೆಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿವೈಶಾಲ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದು. ದೇರಣ್ಣ ಗೌಡ, ಬಟ್ಯರು ಬಂದೂ ಬಾರದ ಹಾಗೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಹಿನಿಯಿಂದ ಮರೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಾರ್‍ಆಯಣನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಆಗುಹೋಗುಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ಕಥೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕೊಂಚ ಇಣುಕಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಿವರಾಮನ ಕೇವಲ ಒಬ್ಬ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕನಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆಯೇ ಹೊರತೂ ಘನ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಕಥೆಯ ಅಂತರಂಗದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬೆಸೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಕಥೆಯು ತನ್ನ ಮಿಡಿತವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕವೆ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ಈ ಪಾತ್ರ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಲಿತು, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅರಳಿ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂವೇದಿಸುತ್ತ ಅದರ ಅಂತಸತ್ವವನ್ನರಿತು, ಅದನ್ನು ಪಳಗಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಅದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬೆಸೆದು ದೃಢವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ರೀತಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಸಾಹಸದ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಮುದ್ರೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಒತ್ತದೆ ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Better late than never. This is an awesome book that captures the human emotions at peak. The characters that was portrayed was brilliant enough to fall in love with it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
The protagonist of the novel Shivaram while heading to his hometown Puttur, loses his way and by the help of two persons, he lands up in the house of Gopalaiah and Shankari's house. The old couple that lived in that single house for almost their entire lifetime with little or no contact to other human beings. Our protagonist falls in love with the hospitality that he receives in the house of old couple. Though he planned to stay for one night, he was made to extend his stay for almost a week. That's when the tragic story of the old couple reveals.
The old couple like any other couple started their journey in that isolated mountain house. The happy family witnessed the birth of two children a boy and a girl. While they grew up and attained the teenage. The girl got married and within two years, the girl died after complications in her post pregnancy. While the son, went to a different city for his education, never returned to his home even after 12 years. The couple narrated these tragic tales to our protagonist on an every day basis. Listening to their lamentations, the protagonist decides to find their lost son by anyhow and started to remembering the faces that he has met in his journey across the country.
In between this story, there are several light moments and short adventures like visiting the deep insides of forests, hunting a tiger in the traditional way and so on.
Overall, a classic book that no one wants to miss. I would recommend this book to every Kannadiga who wants to drift away to the cold breeze of Dakshina Kannada and reminisce the 1940's. A must read.

ನನ್ನ ನೆನಪಿನ ಬುತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ವಿಶೇಷವೆನಿಸುವುದು ಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯ ದಲ್ಲಿ ಸವೆಸಿದ ಜೀವನ. ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಕಾಡಿನಿಂದ ಸೆರೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಊರು ನನಗೆ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಆತ್ಮೀಯವೇ ! ಮನೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕುಮಾರ ಪರ್ವತದ ರಮಣೀಯತೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಹುಚ್ಚೆಬ್ಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇಂತಾ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಸೀಮೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರು 1943 ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಚಿಸಿದ ಕೃತಿಯೇ ‘ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ’. ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬಾಳಿದ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಜೀವ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಈ ಕಥೆಗೆ ನಾಯಕ. ಕಾಯಕವನ್ನೇ ಅಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಾಡಿನ ಸೆರಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ನಂದನವನ ದಂತ ತೋಟವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಇವರ ಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಹೀಗೊಂದು ದಿನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ಅತಿಥಿ ಶಿವರಾಮರು ಇವರ ಗತ ಕಾಲದ ನೆನಪುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಿವಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯರ ಉಪಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಣಿದು ಕೆಲ ದಿನ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ತಂಗುವ ಶಿವರಾಮರು ಬೆಟ್ಟ-ಗುಡ್ಡ ಏರಿ ಇಳಿದು, ಕಾಡು ಮೇಡು ಸುತ್ತಿ, ಅಂತಹ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲಿಸಿ ಜೀವನ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಅವರ ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ,ಛಲಕ್ಕೆ ತಲೆದೂಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಾರದೆ ಇರುವ ಇವರ ಮಗ ಶಂಭುವಿನ ಕುರಿತು ಆಗಾಗ ಮಾತು ಹರಿದು, ಆತನ ಕೆಲ ನೆನಪಿನ ಪುಟಗಳು ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳತ್ತವೆ. ಊರೂರು ಸುತ್ತುವ ಶಿವರಾಮ ರಿಗೆ ತಾನು ಶಂಭುವನ್ನು ಕಂಡಿದ್ದಾಗಿ ತೋಚಿ, ಅವರೂ ಆತನ ಅನ್ವೇಷ���ೆಯೆಡೆ ಚಿತ್ತ ಹರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಉಪಚಾರ, ಸುಂದರ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆ, ಕಾಡಿನ ಸೊಬಗಿನ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತಹ ವಿವರಣೆ, ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಭರಿತ ಕೆಲ ಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾರಂತರು ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದರೆ, ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವೂ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗವಾಗುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಅಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೋ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲೆದಂತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಮಾರ ಪರ್ವತ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಣ್ಣೆದುರು ನಿಂತಂತೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಫಿ ಸೇವನೆಯಾದಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಬೆಚ್ಚನೆಯ ಫಿಲ್ಟರ್ ಕಾಫಿ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.
ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಜಾತ್ರೆಯ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ, ಕುಲ್ಕುಂದ ದ ಜಾನುವಾರು ಸಂತೆಯ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪ ಆಗಾಗ ಬಂದು ಹಳೇ ನೆನಪುಗಳು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರುಕಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ 1940 ರ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದ ಕಾಡಿನ ದಟ್ಟತೆ ಈಗ ಕಾಣಲು ಸಿಗಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ಹುಲಿ ರಾಯರ ದರ್ಶನವೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವೇ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾದಂತಿದೆ.
ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟದ ಸೆರಗಿನ ಸೀಮೆಯ ಜನ ಜೀವನದ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿ ‘ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ’ ಓದಿ.

ಇಂತಾ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಸೀಮೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರು 1943 ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಚಿಸಿದ ಕೃತಿಯೇ ‘ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ’. ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬಾಳಿದ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಜೀವ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಈ ಕಥೆಗೆ ನಾಯಕ. ಕಾಯಕವನ್ನೇ ಅಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಾಡಿನ ಸೆರಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ನಂದನವನ ದಂತ ತೋಟವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಇವರ ಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಹೀಗೊಂದು ದಿನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ಅತಿಥಿ ಶಿವರಾಮರು ಇವರ ಗತ ಕಾಲದ ನೆನಪುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಿವಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯರ ಉಪಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಣಿದು ಕೆಲ ದಿನ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ತಂಗುವ ಶಿವರಾಮರು ಬೆಟ್ಟ-ಗುಡ್ಡ ಏರಿ ಇಳಿದು, ಕಾಡು ಮೇಡು ಸುತ್ತಿ, ಅಂತಹ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲಿಸಿ ಜೀವನ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಅವರ ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ,ಛಲಕ್ಕೆ ತಲೆದೂಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಾರದೆ ಇರುವ ಇವರ ಮಗ ಶಂಭುವಿನ ಕುರಿತು ಆಗಾಗ ಮಾತು ಹರಿದು, ಆತನ ಕೆಲ ನೆನಪಿನ ಪುಟಗಳು ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳತ್ತವೆ. ಊರೂರು ಸುತ್ತುವ ಶಿವರಾಮ ರಿಗೆ ತಾನು ಶಂಭುವನ್ನು ಕಂಡಿದ್ದಾಗಿ ತೋಚಿ, ಅವರೂ ಆತನ ಅನ್ವೇಷ���ೆಯೆಡೆ ಚಿತ್ತ ಹರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಉಪಚಾರ, ಸುಂದರ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆ, ಕಾಡಿನ ಸೊಬಗಿನ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತಹ ವಿವರಣೆ, ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಭರಿತ ಕೆಲ ಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾರಂತರು ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದರೆ, ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವೂ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗವಾಗುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಅಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೋ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲೆದಂತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಮಾರ ಪರ್ವತ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಣ್ಣೆದುರು ನಿಂತಂತೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಫಿ ಸೇವನೆಯಾದಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಬೆಚ್ಚನೆಯ ಫಿಲ್ಟರ್ ಕಾಫಿ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.
ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ ಷಷ್ಠಿ ಜಾತ್ರೆಯ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ, ಕುಲ್ಕುಂದ ದ ಜಾನುವಾರು ಸಂತೆಯ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪ ಆಗಾಗ ಬಂದು ಹಳೇ ನೆನಪುಗಳು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರುಕಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ 1940 ರ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದ ಕಾಡಿನ ದಟ್ಟತೆ ಈಗ ಕಾಣಲು ಸಿಗಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ಹುಲಿ ರಾಯರ ದರ್ಶನವೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವೇ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾದಂತಿದೆ.
ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟದ ಸೆರಗಿನ ಸೀಮೆಯ ಜನ ಜೀವನದ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿ ‘ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ’ ಓದಿ.

ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಮಳೆ ಸುರಿವ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ...
ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರ "ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ" ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ಬರುವ ಈ ಮೇಲಿನ ಪಕೃತಿ ವರ್ಣನೆಯನ್ನೋದುತ್ತಾ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಮನೋವೇಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯನ್ನೇರಿದ್ದಂತೂ ಸುಳ್ಳಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದರೂ ಅವರು ಕಂಡ ಆ ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಚೆಲುವನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲೂ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಾರಣ ನಿರ್ಜೀವ ಯಂತ್ರಗಳು ಕಪ್ಪು ಹೊಗೆ ಚೆಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿ ನೀಲ ಬಾನ ತುಂಬೆಲ್ಲಾ ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಮಲಿನ ಮುಸುಕೊಳಗೆ ಗುದ್ದಾಡುವ ನಾವು ಅಂತಹ ಒಂದು ನಿಶ್ಕಲ್ಮಶ, ಅಲೌಕಿಕ ಅನುಭೂತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸುವುದಾದರೂ ಹೇಗೆ?!

ಮೂಲತಃ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಮಳೆಕಾಡಿನ ಮೂಲದವನಾದ ನಾನು ನನ್ನೂರಿನ ನಿತ್ಯ ಹಸುರಿನ ಪರಿಸರದ ಅಪರಿಮಿತ ಚೆಲುವನ್ನು ಸವಿಯುವ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನರ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಬಹು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡವನಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಮೂರ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮತನ, ಆ ಚೆಲುವು ಇಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೂ ಕಾಣದಾದಾಗ ‘ಯಾವ ನಾಡೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಊರಿನ ಸೊಗಸಿಗೆ ಸಾಟಿಯಾಗದು’ ಎಂಬ ಕಾರಂತರ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಳಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇದೆ ಗುಂಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರ ‘ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ’ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿದೆ. ಈ ಬಾರಿ “ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ”ದ ಮರುಓದು ಮೊದಲಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅರ್ಥವತ್ತಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎನಿಸಿತು. ಆಧುನಿಕತೆಯ ಸರಹದ್ದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಬದುಕಿನ ಬಂಡಿಯನ್ನು ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೋರ್ವರು ಓದಲೇ ಬೇಕಾದ ಚಂದದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕಾರಂತರ “ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಜೀವ”.

This is my second read by Sri K Shivaram Karanth and I wasn't disappointed a bit. I cherished every single page and I had this grin plastered across my face while I read through the humorous dialogues and narration style. Karanth beautifully describes the beauty of malnad region with his exceptional penning. The author narrates the story where he accidentally ends up in a situation where he has to seek a roof under a strange elder couple's house hidden amongst a thick forest for a night. However, his affiliation doesn't end there as the author figures out although the elderly couple seemed happier they were yearning for their long gone son who had abandoned them a decade ago.Despite being a complete stranger to them the narrator provides a listening ear to the pain of the mother while the father flaunts the beauty of the nature. The author sooner plunges into the lives of these old soul, discover that Gopalaiah a very distinct person who turned out to be an adventurous agriculturist.Readers glide through the adventure of hunting a tiger that would prey on the cattles and the pain of the abandoned mother, Shankari.The author as he hears of their pain builds his own perspective of their son while experiencing a peculiar feeling of having come across him at some point of time.A stranger who only sought shelter for a night becomes a shoulder to lean on as he promises to find their son and convince him back home.The characters in this book are simple villagers who gain bliss with the beauty of wild and agriculture. Their lives revolves around nothing but the nature they live in keeping the attraction of urban miles away. The narration is so classic and addictive that it is hard to put it down once held.

Subtle infusion of life lessons in stories set up in seemingly remote places has always been the highlight of all the books written by Karanthajja. Life in harsh but beautiful terrains can be meaningful if you have the strength to look past the difficulties. Gopalayya knows this and does everything to keep people around him happy. He is a true leader and is an inspiration even to the lead character who is narrating the story. This is a must read for people who want to read books of Karanthajja.

Amazing writing by Karanthajja. Reader can definitely enjoy the virtual tour of 1940’s Dakshina Kannada. Narration of nature’s beauty near kumara parvata is the best part of Bettada jeeva.As usual, he never misses to indirectly induce philosophy in his stories.

The narrator ends up at a house in a village by the Western Ghats and ends up staying there with a lonely elderly couple for a few days. There isn't much of a plot, so it doesn't really rush or meander towards any destination/denouement. The book is all about conversations between the narrator and the main characters there - Gopalaiah and his wife Shankaramma, their adopted son and daughter-in-law, a labourer Bhatya and another farmer Deranna.
More than anything it's a chronicling of life and farming in the Western Ghats with the constant threat of elephants, monkeys, tigers, boars etc. Conversations revolve around loneliness living amidst almost-zero human interaction except with one's own family, man-animal conflicts, attempts to bend the ghats to one's own will with their success stories and failures.
There's also the subplot of the couple's son who's gone off to Mumbai and has never returned. You get different perspectives which get coloured by motives and interests of the adopted son and daughter-in-law. Karanth thankfully does not goo too deep into that, keeping it more of a conversational thing. If anything it only adds to enforcing the loneliness of the couple and life in the Ghats. It's less of an empty nest story than is made out to be. The story was written in 1942 and that concept wasn't as strong, at least not in literary circles.
There is quite a bit of philosophizing over the life led by Gopalaiah and he definitely is the main character of the book. Sometimes wondered if Gopalaiah was a metaphor for the towering lonely mountains of the Ghats. Karanth does paint him in no greys except for the conflicts with nature. But even then he tends to accept the defeats in his stride as something that's part of the game. He is written as a man who tends to take others into refuge and gives them a life while his own son moves away.
The story is set around Kukke Subrahmanya with the Kumaraparvatha, Seshagiri mountains towering above. If you've been trekking around there, this book is an absolute treat. If not, it'll make you want to! For me it was a nostalgia trip around the region with one side grassy and the other forest-covered.
At 150 pages it's not too long, but the language used is Dakshina-Kannada dialect based and it was a tad difficult to understand some terms, escpecially with my Bangalore-based language and Kannada not being my mother-tongue. But the style is pretty simple and it's not a major hindrance.

It's impossible for a human with love for life not loving Karant writings. Love for his writings took birth with " Chigurida kanasu" which I picked before the visit to grandparents village. It re-shaped the experience of Village life so while returning to my hometown, I forced myself to visit the Sapna book store to pick a book that can ignite the fire of life in me. While looking for Karanta's book, " Bettada jiva" titled was hiding among the world of books. The title and prologue caught longing attention in heart and mind so I picked it up without a second thought.
The book starts with Karant wandering nature which leads to getting lost from his destined path, and it leads to an unheard village surrounded by wilderness and calmness of hills guarded by tall trees like soldiers. The bad fate of getting lost in unknown land directs him to old couples who tamed the wilderness with their love and affection.
Book mainly highlights the human's essential need for community and companionship. Due to the play of life old couples have lost their daughter during her early pregnancy and the only son has left them in their old age when he falls into the shackles of city life. The author also highlights the reverence towards guests in Indian culture which can be witnessed by the loving couples who started to see their son in Karanta.
Gopalaya does play a major role along with his wife Shankari through their humor and wisdom of old age. The romance between old couples are happening through their hateless fight and teasing throughout the book. At one point, Gopalaya and Shankari's characters convinced me to marry and get lost in the wilderness.
If you read a book, you will understand his adventurous and fearlessness throughout life while he tries to tame the forest land roamed by the wild creatures into an agricultural field. His views about life are simple and straight forward. He examined life as it is without any ideolgical block, that might be the pivotal point for the balanced life he has lived to the end along with his supportive wife.
Karanta visits their home for one day stay, with their love and hospitality he happily stayed there for a week. The author seems to pour every ounce of his experience into his adventure through western ghats. The detailed and eloquent language used for narration by the author will take you on a magical journey throughout the books that will introduce you to the unwelcoming hills for strangers.

Sometimes we travel to some places only for the bliss and pleasure of it. This book is one such pleasure to read. Forest, trees, green, animals and human , all live in harmony in this book. Been Karanth's fan after ಮರಳಿ ಮಣ್ಣಿಗೆ Marali Mannige and this book didn't fail as long as writing is concerned . Looking forward to watch award winning movie of same name based on this novel

ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಎರಡು ಹಿರಿಯ ಜೀವಗಳ ಆಂತರ್ಯ ತೆರೆದಿಡುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ, ಓದುಗರ ಕಣ್ಣು ಸುಂದರಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹಿತ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರವತ್ತರ ಜೀವನ ಬಲು ಬೋರು ಎನ್ನುವವರಿಗೆ ಆ ಜೀವನದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮುಖ ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಕಾರಂತರ ಅನುಭವ ಎಷ್ಟು ಭಿನ್ನ ಎಂಬ ಯೋಚನೆ ಬಾರದೆ ಇರದು. ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯ, ಯವ್ವನ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ, ಮುಪ್ಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೌಲ್ಯವು ಸೇರುವ ಬಗೆ ಸಾರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಮೌಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಯವ್ವನದಲ್ಲೇ ನಾವು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕು ಸಾರ್ಥಕವೆನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದಿದವರಿಗೆ ಅನಿಸದೇ ಇರದು.

ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹತ್ತಿ ಇಳಿದು ಮಿಂದು ಬಂದಂತಹ ಅನುಭವ. ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನವರ ಮತ್ತು ಶಂಕರಮ್ಮನವರ ದಾಂಪತ್ಯ, ಬದುಕಿನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಅವರ ಆದರ್ಶಗಳು, ಅವರ ಜೀವನ ಶೈಲಿ, ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಅವರಿಗಿರುವ ಅತೀವವಾದ ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಆಹಾ, ನನಗೂ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಅವರ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದು , ಅವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸಬಾರದೆ ಎಂದು ಬಹಳ ಆಸೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

This is the first novel that I read of Dr. Shivaram Karanth. From the very beginning, I could see how lovingly and how passionately he constructs his novel. The beauty of the ever beautiful Western Ghats is further beautified by his brilliant narration. The rich and vivid description of the imposing mountains, thick forests, roaring rivers, sublime streams, fertile farmlands and hushed houses of the remote and sparsely populated village of Kelabailu gives life to the story. One will certainly be confronted with the dilemma: if given a chance would one choose to live in such a beautiful but desolate place, or not? Every time a reader brought up in an urban setup begins to long for the serenity of the village and the unpretentious beauty of the nature, the cheerlessness of the omnipresent silence and the unhurried life of the people makes him detest the same serenity and beauty which had so fascinated him just a while ago. This happens over 150 times- the number of pages in the book- the strengthened dilemma almost tearing apart the reader. But this is just one aspect.
The characters in the book have been constructed flawlessly- all of them acquainting themselves to the reader almost immediately. The strong, energetic, yet sensitive Gopalayya who has a wholesome love towards life, the motherly Shankari, the semi-competent Narayana, the calculative Deranna, and the couple's son Shambu- an epitome of English educated rural Indian whose roots and reach are diametrically opposite.
The innumerable emotions are generously evoked throughout the book. The calmness of the nature and the fear of the wild; the excitement of adventure and the mundaneness of daily life; the inexhaustible love, companionship and care between the old couple, and their generosity and hospitality towards strangers; the occasional light humor; the purity and intensity of the mother's (every mother's) love; and the mix of pessimism and optimism with which the old couple awaits their son. It is difficult to deliver a plethora of emotions so characteristically accurate in just 150 pages and that is where the greatness of the book lies. While the delicacies served to the guest makes one drool, the steaming hot bath that Gopalayya gives to Shivaram would certainly remind one the traditional 'enne snana' (oil bath) on the day of Ugadi.
Caste prescriptions and proscriptions, man-animal conflict, attraction of the new generation to the glitz and glamour of the city-life, shifting value systems, and an eternal quest for happiness and satisfaction in life are all dealt with in a subtle and implicit manner without compromising on either description or philosophical sophistication. If Gopalayya, such a kind-hearted and noble person could conclude that the tiger has to be killed if it troubles the people a lot, then the matter is pretty much settled, I guess.
No one theme outcasts the other and each of them remains salient in their own right. The ultimate winner is then the reader.

This book got a talent to question us about the importance between “Jeeva (life)” and Money.
This books is all about one family stayed in remote place of Karnataka. The best part is, we always think that grass of the other side is green but here he never ever complained out remote place or his life. Giving a Unconditional love to another person is not a easy task, but this family did it.

ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬಾಳಿರೋ ಶ್ರಮಜೀವಿ ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯನವರು ಈ ಕಥೆಯ ನಾಯಕ. ಕುಮಾರ ಪರ್ವತ ಈಗ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ತಾಣವೆ ಆಗಿದೆ, ಆದ್ರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೊಂದು ದೂರದಿಂದ ಕಾಣುವ ಮರೀಚಿಕೆಯಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಪರ್ವತದ ದಟ್ಟತೆ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟದ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ, ಹುಲಿರಾಯನ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಅತಿತ್ಯ,ಜನರ ಬದುಕನ್ನ ಸೆರೆ ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಿದು.
ಹುಚ್ಚು ಕೊರಿಕೆಯದರು, ಇನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಓದಬೇಕು.

ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಬೃಹತ್ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ, ಬೃಹತ್ ಮರಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಂತಾಗ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಅವನೆಷ್ಟು ಸಣ್ಣವನೆಂಬ ಅರಿವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಜನರಿಗೆ ತೀರ ಅಸಹಜವೆನಿಸುವ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳ ಕಷ್ಟ ತುಂಬಿದ ಒಂಟಿ ಜೀವನ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಾರಿ ಪೇಟೆ ಸೇರಬಹುದಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಊರೆಂಬ ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹ ಎಷ್ಟು ಕಾಡುಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಬೆಳೆ ಹಾಳು ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಹೋಗಲಾರದು. ಎಷ್ಟು ಬಾರಿ ಜ್ವರ ಬಂದು ಮಲಗಿದರೂ ಹೋಗಲಾರದು. ಇರುವ ಕೆಲವೇ ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ, ಇರುವ ಕೆಲವೇ ನೆನಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮಾತಾಡುವ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯತೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.

This is really a good read. Takes you back to those years when guests were actually treated as Gods. U will fall in love most of the key characters in the book. Relevant even to this day. Takes us through the painful life a couple leads staying away from their son. In the process how they end up creating their own family with adopted son.

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓಡಲು ತಡವಾದರೂ, ಓದಿ ತೃಪ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು.
ಎರಡು ಹಿರಿ ಜೀವಗಳ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ತೆರೆದಿಡುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದುಗರ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹಿತ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿ ಇಳಿದು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿಂದು ಬಂದಂತೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಗೋಪಾಲಯ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಶಂಕರಮ್ಮನ ದಾಂಪತ್ಯ ಜೀವನ, ಆದರ್ಶ, ಬದುಕುವ ಶೈಲಿ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು, ನಾನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಅವರ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಇರಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಆಸೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

Best book I have ever read. Language is so simple and Description of nature is so real I could imagine myself there with author. It was like a dream journey with the author. I have visited many forests but haven't experienced so much connection to nature.
