BROWN,MAXINE - Best of the Wand Years - Amazon.com Music
2009 collection from this '60's Northern Soul favorite featuring tracks from her time on Wand. 'Why Did I Choose You' is a great new uptempo dance find to accompany the original Kent-released Northern Soul tracks like 'It's Torture' and 'I Want a Guarantee'. Northern classics 'One in a Million' and 'Let Me Give You My Lovin' are on here, side by side with Maxine's Brill Building ballads 'Oh No Not My Baby' and ' It's Gonna Be Alright'. Kent.

One of the more underrated - at least in the States - singers, and this is an overview of her most successful period. The reviewer complaining about All In My Mind not being on this album is missing the point, that single was released originally on Nomar, which is why it's not on this album, which is clearly titled the Best of the WAND Years. As for the other reviewer's complaints about reissue tricks, Ace/Kent has done a better job of reissuing and keeping soul in print than damn near anybody; moaning about crossover between this album and the Best Of that Kent released in the 90's is pretty ridiculous overall. This is some of the best music ever recorded in the soul idiom in terms of vocals, musicianship and songwriting. Period. The sound on this CD is superb, liner notes excellent, and it contains a generous 28 songs. Don't hesitate, get it now.
This is called "an updated replacement for the older best-selling CD Oh No Not My Baby". I have that older CD and it's great. This new one has the same songs except that 7 of them are replaced by other songs. So you have to buy the other 21 songs that you already have to get them. If they would have put out a Best of Maxine Brown part 2, I would have bought it. Are there not enough tracks to make up a second part? I really doubt it. It looks like they want to put "best" in the title so they must include the songs everyone expects to be in a best of. This is really irritating.

ALL IN MY MIND is my favourite song by Maxine Brown, and it does not appear on this CD (even though it is on OH NO NOT MY BABY - BEST OF). They said this is an updated version of that album, but without ALL IN MY MIND, that is not true. I will not buy.
Loved this cd, I know her northern soul tracks that are on this cd, and the rest of the tracks were very good too,and the quality of the sound is superb, a great vocalist, very glad I purchased it.
I love Maxine Brown. She has one of THE great soul voices. This collection is a must for any true 60's soul fan. The quality never dips- a few of the signature hits and those big northern stompers ( presented in a different mix) and many "new" tracks appearing on CD for the first time. The accompanying booklet is superb as you would expect from a KENT release. With the guys at KENT you get quality guaranteed- excellent sound quality- clean and crisp. You just know that each KENT release is compiled by true soul fans who have a passion for the music and the artists. A great collection.
