Because a knowledgeable friend has been raving about Keen for years, I bought this CD. When I told him I'd found Keen's work merely workmanlike, he asked if several songs, which he named, were included. They weren't. He said he couldn't imagine that this was a true "best of" compilation. The songs are okay, the production is by-the-numbers. I'll listen one more time, down the road.
A luck would have it, early on in his career Robert Earl Keen nailed down is signature sound and his lyrical take on life. I bought this CD before I discovered Keen's complete playlist on Spotify (sorry, Amazon). This early compendium - he's done a lot more since - contains some of the songs that originally brought him to fame. BTW - since I don't have Spotify in my car, Keen's CD's are welcome companions on long road trips.
I first met Robert Earl Keen in 1989 when he played at the Kerrville Folk Festival, a 4 day outdoor music festival in Kerrville, Texas (in the heart of the Texas Hill Country) when he sang "Copenhegan" he brought down the house and I was hooked, I've been a fan ever since, give him a chance, try him and you'll be hooked as well
I love REK but this is not the CD you want. If you want and introduction to his music, there are better compilations. I prefer "Best" or maybe "The Road Never Ends". This is only the best of two CDs, Picnic and Walking Distance.
