For vocal grittiness, heartfelt lyrics and sheer versatility, few country artists compare to Bobby Bare. Unfortunately, so many of his hits have been covered by other artists that very few followers of country or cross-over music are aware of how good Bobby really is.
Three of his best (Detroit City, 500 Miles Away from Home and Green, Green Grass of Home) have been covered so many times they're close to buried. Although some of the newer releases had better commercial success, none has the honest, straight-forward power of Bare's delivery.
His first big hit, All-American Boy, was released under the name of Bill Parsons, and takes a good natured jab at the early success and styles of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The beautiful Four Strong Winds gives a gentle nod toward the Western side of country, while Miller's Cave has a folksy sound oddly reminiscent of the Kingston Trio. For sheer gut-wrenching lyrics, the Streets of Baltimore is an emotional tour-de-force.
There are many country artists who are better known than Bobby Bare. Many are more commercially successful. However, very few are more talented. Give a listen to The Best of Bobby Bare and let his refreshing, unadorned vocals take you on a guided tour of the classic sounds of country music.

Politicians promise a chicken in every pot.
Bobby Bare's Detroit City CD should be in every home.
I don't usually listen to lyrics, but his lyrics on Detroit City
are humorous and logical. Tequila Sheila is a bombshell!

Special Song's From A Special Era For Music!
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2014Verified Purchase
As with his 1963 Hits "500 Miles Away From Home" and "Detroit City" and his 1964 Hit "Four Strong Winds": Bobby's 1966 version of "Green Green Grass Of Home" is early to mid 60's music at its best! Tom Jones also had a Top 20 US Hit and a #1 Chart Topper in The UK with "Green Green Grass Of Home" in 1966 but Bobby's version has always been my favorite!
These four songs are mostly how I remember Bobby Bare during his early days in the 60's and this 1994 Razor & Tie CD is one of only a few CD's that has his version of "Green Green Grass Of Home" on it.
I bought his "16 Biggest Hits" CD several years ago knowing that song wasn't on that CD and I should have had patience and found this CD first! Even though it wasn't a huge hit and didn't chart: it's still as touching as the three Top 10 Country Classics of his I also listed above ("500 Miles Away From Home" was also a Top 10 Pop Hit).
These twenty one tunes are from the years 1958-1969 and "Green Green Grass Of Home" originated on Bobby's 1966 Studio Album called "The Streets Of Baltimore" and that #5 Self Titled Country Hit can also be found on this CD along with four other Top 10 Hits. That's a total of eight Top 10's on this CD plus Two Top 20's, one Top 30, one Top 40 and one Top 50 and all twenty one songs are winners.
This CD has good sound quality and it comes in the standard plastic jewel case that has a foldout leaflet in it which has a mini-biography of Bobby and it also has song info. On the day I typed this Review: this Disc was Out Of Print but it is nice!
I am not putting down The "16 Biggest Hits" Series but as with Bobby Bare and a few other Country Music Legends: I've recently replaced my "16 Biggest Hits" CD's for more thorough CD Compilations because I was missing a few favorite tunes I love that were not on that popular Series but I do still have other Country artists represented by "16 Biggest Hits" that are perfect for me.
Around 1995 "Time Life Music" came out with their excellant: although underrated "The Country Music Hall Of Fame Presents: Legendary Country Singers" Series CD's and I am very surprised Bobby Bare wasn't included in that Series! He definately deserved it.....but this CD is excellant too.
My four favorite songs of Bobby's that I listed in the first paragraph have been covered many times by other artists and I still believe Bobby's versions are the best but I do have to admit.....The quality of Neil Young's and "The Searchers" versions of "Four Strong Winds" are phenomenal as well! I have also typed an earlier Amazon Review on The Searchers.
