Bernd Schneider (born 20 July 1964 in St. Ingbert, Saarland, West Germany) is a German racing driver, famed for winning the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship four times in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2006.[1] A long-term factory driver for Mercedes, Schneider would enter the revived DTM in 2000 as the reigning Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft Champion, having won the last title in 1995.[2]

As a result of claiming the 1995 title, Schneider would enter the 2000 season with #1 as his race number, partnered by Thomas Jäger.[2] The German racer duly went on to claim victory in the season opening race in Hockenheim, with five further victories carrying Schneider to an inaugural title.[3]

Partnered by Peter Dumbreck for 2001, it would be a very similar sophomore season for Schneider, with six more victories carrying the German racer to a second successive crown.[4] Yet, a disappointing 2002 campaign saw Schneider wait until the 2002 Lausitzring Feature Race to secure his first victory, and hence left him in a distant second behind Laurent Aïello.[5]

Yet, Schneider would bounce back in 2003, emerging triumphant in a season long duel with teammate Christijan Albers that lasted through to the finale in Hockenheim.[6] However, the 2004 season would see Schneider's form disappear, with just a single win at the season finale leaving him in sixth in the Championship.[7]

Another comparatively poor season for Scheider followed in 2005, with the German racer again only claiming victory at the season finale to secure fourth in the Championship.[8] Yet, in 2006 the German veteran's form would return, with two wins and a run of five consecutive podiums leaving Schneider as the Champion, and the most successful German touring car driver in history.[9]

Unfortunately for Schneider his renaissance would be brief, as he slipped back to sixth in the 2007 Championship with just one win.[10] Likewise, 2008 saw the German veteran finish in sixth with another lone victory, prompting him to call time on his full-time racing career at the age of 43.[11]

Schneider became a Mercedes Brand Ambassador after retiring from professional racing, and instead served as a factory driver in several GT programmes run by Mercedes.[12] He would go on to claim several class and outright victories in the Dubai 24 Hours and the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, as well as take part in the Gulf 12 Hours and 24 Hours of Spa Francorchamps.[12]

Prior to his success in the revived DTM, Schneider enjoyed a brief career in Formula One, and claimed the 1997 FIA GT Championship title with Mercedes.[12]

Background[]

Schneider began his career in karting in his native Germany, and would compete at a national level from the age of ten.[12] In 1980 the German youth would win the World Junior Championship title as well as the German National Championship, before claiming the European and African titles in subsequent years.[12] In 1984 Schneider would graduate into car racing for the first time, entering the Formula Ford Germany Championship.[12]

Formula Foundations:1984 - 1987[]

Schneider had a strong rookie season in FF Germany, finishing second in the 1600 class to earn a seat in the 2000 class for 1985.[12] The German youth duly claimed fourth in his first full 2000 season, before graduating to the Formula 3 Germany Championship in 1986.[12] Once again, a strong rookie campaign saw Schneider secure fourth in the Championship, with other outings at the Macau Grand Prix and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft.[12]

A second season in German F3 would work wonders for Schneider, with the German racer securing the Championship title with seven victories in eight races.[12] He would also complete a partial campaign in the DTM, as well as make his World Touring Car Championship debut with a one-off race.[12]

A German Hope: 1988 - 1990[]

The 1988 season saw Schneider handed a seat in the West German based Zakspeed squad in Formula One, partnering Piercarlo Ghinzani.[12] However, the German racer would have a difficult season in an uncompetitive car, failing to qualify in all bar six of the races.[12] Indeed, come the end of the season Schneider would claim a best finish of twelfth at his home race, having failed to threaten the points throughout.[12]

Retained for 1989 Schneider would have an even more difficult season, with just two starts ending in retirement as he failed to pre-qualify for the other fourteen races.[12] Regardless, Schneider would be handed a reserve seat at Arrows for 1990, although he would only get two chances to drive the car during the season.[12] In between his F1 outings in 1990, Schneider would claim the Interserie Div.1 Championship for Porsche, as well as complete a campaign in the World Sports Championship with the German marque.[12]

Meisterschaft Marvel: 1991 - 1996[]

Schneider returned to the DTM in 1991, with Zakspeed taking him on for the second half of the season after the German racer completed a campaign in the IMSA GTP Championship.[12] His late arrival left him in fifteenth in the Championship, before a far better season in a factory run Mercedes saw Schneider climb to third in 1992 with four wins.[12] The German racer then matched that result in 1993, before slipping back to tenth in 1994 despite adding two wins to his tally.[12]

In 1995, however, Schneider would finally show his potential, charging to the Meisterschaft title with five victories, as well as claim the mutual International Touring Car Championship crown.[12] The German racer duly finished as runner up in the ITCC in 1996, before being moved into GT racing by Mercedes when the Meisterschaft/ITCC folded at the end of the season.[12]

GT Ambitions: 1997 - 1999[]

Mercedes placed Schneider as their lead driver in the FIA GT1 Championship, with the German racer duly claiming the title with six victories.[12] 1998 saw Schneider again challenge for the title, but have to settle for third, while also retiring from the 24 Hours of Lemans having qualified on pole.[12] 1999 saw Schneider only compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an endeavour which again ended in retirement, as Mercedes instead deployed the German racer as a test/development driver as they prepared to enter the revived DTM in 2000.[12]
