Bernard Anício Caldeira Duarte (born 8 September 1992), better known as Bernard and Bernard Duarte, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays for Emirati club Sharjah FC as a winger. A left-sided player, he is known for his pace and energy.
Bernard joined Atletico Mineiro at the age of 14, following nine years playing for Comercial Esporte Clube Barreiro, a team in his home city of Belo Horizonte. He twice fought back from being released by Serie A Atletico to secure a professional contract and was loaned to the club’s feeder team Democrata in 2010. Bernard made 16 appearances and scored 14 goals to win a recall to Atletico and a senior debut in March 2011. In 2012, he helped his side clinch second place in the top flight, 12 months after finishing 15th. Bernard also helped Atletico to win Campeonato Mineiro in two consecutive years, before finally winning South America’s most prestigious trophy, the Copa Libertadores in 2013 after beating Paraguayan side Olimpia on penalties.
Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk paid £21.5million to beat off a host of rival suitors to sign Bernard in summer 2013 and he ended his first season in Europe celebrating a league title success. He won another eight honours in the following years, including three league titles. He was released in 2018 after his contract has expired. He joined Premier League club Everton on the 2018 summer transfer window deadline day in England for a free transfer.
Bernard made his international debut for Brazil against arch-foes Argentina in Buenos Aires in November 2012 and started his first match the following year in a 6-0 rout of Australia. He is part of Brazil squad in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2014 FIFA World Cup.
