I own every single book by this author, except one. The story in this book is a vast departure from his previous books and takes place in the early 20th century.
Although I enjoy almost every work by this author, and usually purchase any of his books before even reading a synopsis, I was not drawn in to the world of bank robbers in a different age and century. I just could not relate to the characters of a different era as I can of characters of the modern day. It was difficult to relate to these young gay lovers, and a bit unbelievable that 18 year old bank robbers were able to commit the crimes they did for as long as they did without getting caught.
The story of the couples' love for one another was sweet, however, unlike most all of Mark Roeder's books, contained constant and continual graphic sex scenes that I had to keep skipping over. Unlike many authors of gay romance, one of the reasons I like this author is that most of his work does not contain graphic sex scenes, but only focuses on love and lovemaking in more general terms. If I wanted to read porn I'd by a porn novel.
At least Mr. Roeder is getting a little better at proof reading his work before publication, as there were very few errors, unlike many of his books. I've always given Mark Roeder's books 5 stars, but because of the unbelievability of the story, the unrelatable era, and the continual graphic sex scenes that took away from the story, I can only give this book 3 stars.
If like me, you're a Mark Roeder fan and buy everything he publishes, by all means, go ahead and read this book. However, if you're looking for a more relateable love story in a more modern era, or a more believable or interesting story, most of his other works will offer that.
