Steelers draft capsule
The following is the first of seven Pittsburgh Steelers position analyses for the 2024 NFL Draft, which begins Thursday, April 25:
QUARTERBACKS
Current roster: Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Kyle Allen
Last five drafts: Kenny Pickett (2022, first round) was supposed to be Ben Roethlisberger’s successor as the team’s franchise quarterback, but two average seasons later, he’s now with the Eagles. Chris Oladokun (2022, seventh round) was picked before the 49ers selected Brock Purdy. He hasn’t played yet in the NFL but has two Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs.
Top quarterbacks available: Caleb Williams, USC; Jayden Daniels, LSU; Drake Maye, North Carolina; J.J. McCarthy, Michigan; Bo Nix, Oregon; Michael Penix Jr., Washington
Penn State/Pitt players: Former Pitt starter Kedon Slovis, who transferred to BYU, could possibly be a seventh-round pick. Pitt’s Phil Jurkovec could get a tryout with a team.
Possible Steelers picks: None
Analysis: The Steelers are rolling with Wilson at quarterback, at least in the early going, with Fields expected to eventually be the starter — if everything goes well. The signing of Allen gives the Steelers their third-stringer, so no need exists to select a quarterback in this year’s draft. They’ll most likely sign a free agent rookie — someone who slips through the seven rounds.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Current roster: Kickers–Chris Boswell, Matthew Wright. Punter–Cameron Johnston. Long snapper–Christian Kuntz. Returners–Cordarrelle Patterson, Calvin Austin, Quez Watkins
Last five drafts: Pressley Harvin III (2021, seventh round) never stood out in three seasons and was released earlier this year. Austin (2022, fourth round) returned punts for the Steelers last year.
Top special teamers available: Kickers–Joshua Karty, Stanford; Will Reichard, Alabama; Harrison Melvis, Missouri. Punters–Tory Taylor, Iowa; Ryan Rehkow, BYU; Austin McNamara, Texas Tech. Long snappers–Joe Shimko, NC State; Slater Zellers, Arizona State
Penn State/Pitt players: PSU’s Alex Felkins could get a tryout with an NFL team in training camp.
Possible Steelers picks: None
Analysis: By signing Johnston, the Steelers have their punter, and they re-signed Wright at kicker to push Boswell in the offseason. They also appear to be set with Kuntz at long snapper, Patterson to return kickoffs and Austin to return punts.
