Ben Mee: Ex-Burnley captain set to join Brentford on a free transfer

Brentford are set to sign ex-Burnley captain Ben Mee on a free transfer.

The defender, 32, left the Clarets when his contract expired following the club's relegation to the Championship for the first time since 2015.

Mee spent 11 years with Burnley, helping them to two promotions to the Premier League.

He initially joined the Clarets on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City in 2011 before signing permanently the following August.

Mee ended last season assisting caretaker coach Mike Jackson as Burnley were relegated.

Brentford lost midfielder Christian Eriksen to Manchester United earlier in July, shortly after signing Albania goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha on a free transfer.

The Bees have also signed Hull City forward Keane Lewis-Potter and Bologna defender Aaron Hickey.

Burnley fan here, Ben Mee is a fabulous signing.

Ben does not owe Burnley anything. He was loyal and a great captain. Both Tarkowski and Keane owe their England caps to him. The new owners are obviously not willing to pay premier league wages and appear not to be willing to pay what it might take to bounce back. As a season ticket holder I despair for our chances. Hope I’m wrong.

I think Gareth Southgate is more responsible for the caps you mention. Mind you, it's not the greatest achievement under him, there's not many who haven't had a cap courtesy of GS. They're being given away with a McDonald's happy meal next.

Vincent Kompany has really been thrown in at the deep end if Burnley are serious about trying to go straight back up, the spine of his team has gone. Tarkowski, Pope, Mee and now sounds like McNeil is possibly on his way too. Anyway a decent signing for Brentford if it works out.

Ben Mee to Brentford could prove to be the signing of the summer.
Bags of experience to pass on to the younger boys, calm, assured and he'll score a few too. Lots to offer.
In the same mould as Gary Cahill from Chelsea to Palace back in 2019.

Burnley made him mate. Burnley is in difficulty and being a captain he too suffered, nothing more than that. But it's really an achievement for Burnley to stay long at the premier league level with limited finances.

I'm a Saints fan and granted I've not watched Burnley lots, but this seems an astute signing.

Lots of PL experience, is clearly a decent defender (despite last year), will help improve and develop younger players around him.

Looking outside of the top 6 teams I think he would improve most, if not all of them.
