When facing Corey Anderson in the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix finals at Bellator 277, things had gotten bad for champion Vadim Nemkov. Luckily, an accidental headbutt created a cut and led to that fight being declared a no-contest. On Friday night, the pair rematched in Chicago and Nemkov displayed improved wrestling defense to take a clear unanimous decision victory in the main event of Bellator 288.

From the opening round, Nemkov relied on a solid jab and heavy leg kicks to maintain distance and dictate the pace of the fight. When Anderson adjusted to that attack, Nemkov brought crisp straight right hands to Anderson's jaw to keep the challenger unsettled.

The most dramatic moment of the fight came in Round 1, when Nemkov landed a late spinning kick to the head that left Anderson visibly shaken.

The flashy attacks would never again be as effective for Nemkov, but he had created a puzzle Anderson could not solve. Takedowns had been a key to Anderson taking over the first fight before the cut.

Nemkov successfully defended all of Anderson's 15 takedown attempts, the final ingredient in the recipe for Nemkov's success that allowed him to not only retain his 205-pound championship, but also win the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix to take home the $1 million prize. He did so by scores of 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46.

"I was well prepared," Nemkov said of his success in the rematch. "I wasn't distracted. I held a very high pace. Like I said, in rematches, I never lose."

A new champion was crowned in the co-main event. Usman Nurmagomedov pulled off a clear decision win over Patricky Pitbull in a clash for the lightweight championship.

Nurmagomedov dictated the fight with a constant stream of kicks. Pitbull never achieved any measurable success in the fight. Instead, he was forced into lengthy stretches of inactivity as Nurmagomedov let go with kicks to the body and head that left Pitbull in neutral.

After five rounds, the official scorecards read 50-45, 50-44 and 50-44. Nurmagomedov, cousin of UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, was never in danger throughout the fight and earned his first world title over one of Bellator's most prolific knockout artists.

Patricky Pitbull (c) vs. Usman Nurmagomedov -- Round 3: A fairly uneventful round that saw Nurmagomedov continue to land kicks from a variety of angles while Pitbull chased, not doing anything meaningful offensively. Nurmagomedov goes to the "championship rounds" for the first time but Pitbull has not done anything to sap the challenger's energy and make him struggle coming into the fourth round.
