A pretty solid and diverse country rock record from JJW that's really not very country sounding. A couple of great songs though in "Where is D.A.R..." and "Some Go Home" and that brings the overall album up a notch. I'm intrigued.

Is it me or does anyone else hear Kevin Ayers here too?

This was the tipping point. After finding pay dirt in folky music with Mr. Bojangles & Driftin' Way of Life, Walker put his toe in the water into art-rock with Five Years Gone, and found it didn't suit him. So with the dawn of the 70's he put on a cowboy hat and joins the ranks of the Texas outlaws with Being Free.

Here on he invents his rollicking country with the brilliant "Harmonica Talk", "Vince Triple-O Martin" and "D.A.R.". Sure, most of the album retreads the sound of his folky past, but most of the ballads are mostly sure-handed, and less wistful. He's at his very best with "Stoney" and "More Often Than Not".
