Beijing 2008: One World, One Dream
The Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 (BOCOG) has unveiled its slogan for the 2008 Games. “One World, One Dream” is the motto that will be forever associated with the Beijing Games. The slogan was announced by Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, during a ceremony attended by 6,000 guests and transmitted live on national television. The slogan was also sent by text message to all the subscribers of China Mobile, a Beijing 2008 official partner.
The Universal Values Of The Olympic Spirit
The Slogan “One World, One Dream” is said to fully reflect the essence and the universal values of the Olympic spirit – unity, friendship, progress, harmony, participation and dream. The motto also manifests the core concepts of the Beijing Olympic Games – Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics. Inspired by the Olympic ideals, it expresses the common wish of all mankind for peace and a bright future. We belong to the same world and we share the same aspirations and dreams.
Captured The Olympic Spirit
The International Olympic Committee President, Jacques Rogge, commented on the new Beijing 2008 slogan, “The Olympic Games are unique in their ability to attract the world’s attention, using sport to promote peace and understanding. The IOC is delighted that BOCOG’s slogan for the 2008 Olympic Games has captured that Olympic spirit.”
Bright Future
BOCOG President Liu Qi commented on the greater meaning of the slogan during his speech at the launch ceremony, “One World, One Dream” is an embodiment of the wisdom of hundreds of thousands of people. It is a slogan that conveys the lofty ideal of people in Beijing, as well as in China, to share the global community and civilisation and to create a bright future hand-in-hand with people from the rest of the world.”
210,000 Entries
The competition for the slogan received around 210,000 entries, sent in using some 10,123 e-mails and 10,038 letters. The entries came from all over the world, with most of the slogans being submitted in Chinese, as well as some in English, French and Spanish. Once the competition had come to a close, a group of invited experts evaluated, pre-selected and previewed all the submissions based on pre-set standards and in line with the principles of equality and fairness. The final slogan was the outcome of this collective wisdom.
BEIJING 2008
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 August 2008 until 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the event with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.
