Investigators with Waterloo regional police were in the area of Block Line Road and Homer Watson Boulevard Friday morning as they investigated a fatal shooting that happened just before midnight.

Investigators with Waterloo regional police will be in the area of Block Line Road and Homer Watson Boulevard on Friday as they continue to investigate a fatal shooting.

Police said officers responded to a report of an injured male just before midnight in that area. They confirmed a 32-year-old Kitchener, Ont., man was located with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say it is believed this was a targeted shooting and there is no concern for public safety.

"Based on the preliminary investigation we have done in the last 10 hours or so, we believe it is a targeted incident," Kyle Lambert, an inspector in criminal investigations for Waterloo regional police, said during a media scrum Friday.

Lambert said since the investigation is still in the early stages and police will release information about a suspect or suspects when it becomes available.

Investigators will conduct a canvass of the neighbourhood for witnesses and information on Friday.

"There will be increased [police] presence in the area looking for video footage, dash-cam footage, those types of things," Lambert said.

Lambert said this is the sixth shooting in Waterloo region this year.
