Inspiration and development[]
Beach House was written by Jepsen during the development of The Loneliest Time, sometime between 2020 and 2022. The song was inspired by Carly's experience of using dating apps for the first time, due to "pandemic-induced boredom," and her encounter with meeting someone, who invited her over to his beach house in Malibu, whilst he was already in a relationship. [2]
Jepsen recounted what happened with her sister over a bottle of wine later that evening, and stated, "What’s in it for me? Some guy with a beach house who’s probably gonna hurt my feelings?" which inspired the hook of the song. Five minutes later, Jepsen mapped out the melody in her head and brought it a recording session the next day. [3]
Carly brought her idea for the song to the studio, "a summery slice of Euro pop about what it feels like to be a single woman in her 30s navigating dating apps," in a session with Nate Cyphert and Alex Hope. Initially, the pair were confused about what the song was about, though together they "brainstormed some of the worst dates imaginable and wrote them out on a whiteboard," and developed the final track together. Regarding the song and her writing process, Carly stated "I think anytime I have an experience that I don't know how to process, I document it in writing." [2] "I wanted to highlight that feeling when you’re disenchanted after [being on] a dating app for a hot minute to be like, 'that guy’s just going to wreck me.'" [4]
Guest vocalists[]
Beach House features guest vocals from Joey Hendricks and Tony Marino; bandmates Bobby Wooten and Jared Manierka, and collaborator Ben Romans. Carly states how it was the draw of the shortest straw for who had to sing the lyrics, "I got a lake house in Canada and I'm probably gonna harvest your organs." [4]

Beach House was released on August 5th 2022. Prior to its official announcement, the song was revealed alongside the reveal of and pre-order for The Loneliest Time, on August 2nd 2022. The song was officially announced by Carly on August 3rd via social media, and a snippet was shared via TikTok a day later. [5] Lyrics to the song were first teased by Carly in January 2022. [6]
