Rangers: Ferguson in 'shocking' Dundee verdict, 'miracle' needed

Barry Ferguson shares ‘shocking’ Dundee v Rangers verdict as ‘miracle’ now needed

Barry Ferguson says a “miracle” is needed to get Dundee versus Rangers finally played this week and finds it “shocking” to be in this situation in the first place.

For the second time this season, the fixture at Dens Park was postponed on Wednesday (10 April) due to a waterlogged pitch, leading to criticism from Gers boss Philippe Clement and pundits.

The match is slated to take place this coming Wednesday (17 April) but former Light Blues captain Ferguson, who branded the situation “embarrassing”, thinks it is highly unlikely the game goes ahead.

Writing for the Daily Record (13 April), he said: “Only one thing has surprised me about the Dens Park pitch fiasco over these last few days.

“And it certainly wasn’t when their game against Rangers was called off for a second time on Wednesday afternoon. Like everyone else who watched Don Robertson’s 11am inspection live on Sky Sports News, I could see that coming from a mile off. No, what I find absolutely shocking is that here we all are, on Saturday morning, waiting for this farce to happen all over again next week.

“I’m no Sean Batty but I have the same weather app on my phone as most folk do these days and it’s telling me more rain is heading for Tayside over the course of the next few days. And unless there’s some kind of miracle, it’s going to come down on a pitch that can’t handle another drop of the stuff.”

Dundee v Rangers situation a shambles

Ferguson further explained in his column how the situation is making a laughing stock of Scottish football and it is incredibly difficult to disagree with that assessment because, quite frankly, the whole thing has been an absolute shambles.

Rangers have now twice travelled for the game only to have it called off and there is a distinct possibility the same thing might happen again in midweek, when the situation should have been taken out of Dundee’s hands by now.

The focus has to be squarely on avoiding a slip-up at second-from-bottom Ross County on Sunday but the situation is sure to have played on the minds of those at Rangers, who were hoping to have played the game in hand they have over Celtic – who lead the Gers by a single point in a thrilling title tussle.

Even worse is the fact that the rearranged game now takes place only four days before Rangers face off with Hearts in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup at Hampden. It is a situation that was wholly avoidable.
