She goes into further detail about it in this interview (from Feb 2017). It's in french, but Google Translate can help you out:

Wow thanks for that, I feel pretty bad for her

What a strange article. Most of it seems to be taken from old articles, presented as if everybody has been recently interviewed.

Baria Qureshi:It's hard to explain my departure from The xx. It was not a distance, it was more than that. It was a matter of control, jealousy, emotions, resentment between us, and also tensions over money. The decision did not come from me, I was released without notice, and without a clear explanation. I can not go into the details, it was a very personal problem between me and Oliver. Anything I could tell would certainly be perceived as defamatory. What I can say is that money has been an important factor. If I did not say anything and I let go, I would still be in the group but without winning my share of royalties. All three of them discussed the sharing of copyrights, but not with me, the album came out without even signing a contract. When I spoke up on the subject, I was ejected from the group two weeks later. The others could count on their families to support them financially, not me. After my expulsion, it took us three years to reach an agreement on the legal level ...

Oliver Sim (for the webzine The Stool Pigeon in 2009) : The transition from thirteen to twenty years was for me a big leap forward. I think Baria and I have just evolved, with different personalities. And I do not think that the band's European tour after the release of the album had a good impact on it, really. It's ridiculous and sad, but I can not wait to see what happens now. For the first time in a long time, we will be able to blow, and work.

Baria Qureshi: The way Oliver depicted my departure made me angry because he told it in a way that discredited my work and my contribution. It seemed like all the problems were on my shoulders and I was unable to work with the group. But Oliver never talked about his problems, or why he could not work with me anymore.

:'(

I feel for her.

Does she have a solo career?

so basically oliver didn't want to give money to baria? woah

or am i wrong? i'm confused

why would it be defamation if it's true

Yeah Oliver instigated and orchestrated the push against her owning any copyrights or receiving royalties for her writing/production work. I believe this is translated from French so the translation wont be exact. It also says “perceived” meaning theres so much bad stuff apart from the royalites/copyright issue that it could almost come across as defamatory if Baria was to start listing the problem. Like Oliver could have been behaving weirdly on tour and doing odd non consensual stuff and crossing lines but without anyone being there it’s one persons word against the others. That could be “perceived” as defamatory if theres no physical proof. After a 3 year legal battle just to get her copyrights, I dont think Baria would want to fight it out even more with these 3 who just hid behind their wealthy lawyer and record label.

As far as I can tell the three didn't get on with her and she was removed.

TIL about Baria even existing. Had no idea that they had even toured the material from the first album with a 4th band member. Internet doesn't turn up anything concrete about the split.

I finally got around to watching some of their older music videos the other day and was wondering who the fourth person in Crystalised was.

u/pantherclad avatar

Yeah, it's pretty strange, can't help but wonder what direction their music could have taken with her still in the band

Yea, the first album is still my favorite but I love the other two and Jamie's solo stuff so I am content with where they ended up

For me personally, her leaving might have had an impact on their music since the second album onward bored me to tears!

u/futuranotfree avatar

she must have had a huge influence on the first album, and thats why the second albums onwards never had that magic, despite having some really good songs. i feel bad for her and i hope she’s doing well

My thoughts exactly! The 2nd and 3rd albums were simply boring lol
