      Bandit Reviews

Bandit is a passable entertainment, but it falls short of being remarkable. It's an average film that is likely to be forgettable once it ends.

While perhaps not a classic of the heist genre, Bandit is a fun rollercoaster that comfortably holds its own

One of those true-crime films where you come away with the impression that the film-makers have spent a bit too long hanging out with their subject, sitting in smoky bars listening to tall tales about the good ol’ bad days.

Bandit works well as a piece of lightweight entertainment that has clearly taken quite a bit of artistic license with the real-life events upon which it is based.

      An entertaining but limited thriller.

The movie's tone is entirely pleasant and agreeable. ... A very relaxed and often hilarious look at life as a bank robber.

Duhamel is perfect as Galvan, pouring on the charm and smooth talk as needed, whether it’s talking his way into a homeless shelter after hours or convincing the crime boss to take a chance on him. It’s the sort of role the actor seems born to play.

Director Allan Ungar’s Bandit entertains because of genre alone, but the ambiguous messaging leaves much to be desired.

The problem with telling a true story like this is that the ending is written in stone and there’s nothing the screenplay can do about it. The term “anticlimax” comes to mind.

Famed bank robbers are a genre onto themselves, but Allan Ungar’s latest is a breezy good time with enough clever turns, an engaged supporting cast and a charming, easygoing performance by Josh Duhamel.

Bandit is anchored by a charismatic performance from Josh Duhamel as Gilbert Galvan Junior. With solid support from Mel Gibson as a partner in crime, Bandit only suffers from an excess amount of plot and indulgent running time.

Toronto director Allan Ungar keeps the pace fast and light; despite a two-hour running time, the film never lags.

Duhamel is charming, pulling off face-paced robberies in the winning heist film "Bandit."

Duhamel gives the antihero an offbeat charm, although the script struggles to sustain any meaningful suspense while juggling comedy and drama.

A lighthearted if somewhat pedestrian caper movie that, anchored in Duhamel’s animated performance, is likable enough but saunters more often than it sprints.

      Full Review | Original Score: C+ | Sep 23, 2022

Propelled by a great performance by Duhamel, Bandit is an entertaining film worth stealing some time for.

While treading in familiar "cat and mouse" territory, this is still a true crime thriller that's actually thrilling. Bandit is over two hours long, but the balance between the action and the story is so solid, it's easy to get lost in what's happening.

      Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 22, 2022

Duhamel is terrific in this solid crime caper.

      Full Review | Sep 22, 2022

"Bandit" is a fascinating stew of genres. It's a biographical drama, a lighthearted crime caper, a straight heist film, and even a heartfelt love story all wrapped into one surprisingly cohesive whole.

[B]y the end, it mostly feels as if we've seen a predictable story that bypasses its better ideas and rests on its most obvious ones.
