Balliol College

Founded in 1263, Balliol is one of the most prestigious Oxford colleges and boasts an impressive array of alumni, featuring four British Prime Ministers including former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

Since its foundation in 1263 Balliol has been one of the most progressive, politically active and best-performing colleges of the University. The numerous notable alumni of the College include Adam Smith, father of modern Economics, writers Matthew Arnold and Aldous Huxley and three former British Prime Ministers (Herbert Asquith, Harold Macmillan, and Edward Heath).

Balliol is perfectly located in the centre of town, less than a 5-minute walk away from the Ashmolean Museum, Radcliffe Square and the city’s shopping districts.

Balliol is one of the colleges in which our Oxford Summer School is hosted. Students will be accommodated in single rooms which are standard undergraduate bedrooms. Bathrooms are shared between a few students. Male and female students will be separated by corridor and/or staircases.

In the college students are overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge.

The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications.

Each campus has a few members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
