I purchased this CD specifically because the first track is "That's How I Got to Memphis." As far as I am able to tell, this is the only Tom T. Hall CD that has that song on it. There may be others, but I wasn't able to find them. That song has special significance to me, as I used to go "overnight to Memphis" on my way to other places - - sometimes I didn't pass through Memphis..., or even near Memphis, but the trips became an "overnight to Memphis" experience nonetheless. (It's hard to explain, but possibly some reading this comment can identify....) In any case, I first heard "That's How I Got to Memphis" on the last episode of the HBO series "Newsroom," a small amount sung by Tom T. Hall when Charlie quizzed Will on the title and then after Charlie's funeral when Will (actor and singer/guitarist Jeff Daniels) plays and sings it with Charlie's grandson playing the string bass. It immediately resonated with me, so I set out to find a Tom T. Hall recording and this is it. The rest of the CD has many standards and a number of Hall originals. Frankly, it gets a little "long" at the end, but I have what I wanted and the next time I go "overnight to Memphis" I'll play on the way...
Although not especially successful at the time based on chart data, such data never tells the whole story. There are some great songs among the tracks here, and Tom T Hall went on to more commercially successful albums over the years that followed.
Four tracks were released as American country singles from Ballad of forty dollars, beginning with I washed my face in the morning dew (a great song that barely made the top 30), and ending with the title track (a top 5 country hit. Another track, That's how I got to Memphis, eventually became a top 5 country hit for Bobby Bare, who recorded several of Tom's songs.
The second album, Homecoming, yielded the #1 country hit A week in the country jail, plus a top 5 country hit (Homecoming) and a minor country hit (Strawberry farms). Another track, Margie's at the Lincoln Park Inn, became a top 5 country hit for Bobby Bare. Another notable track, I miss a lot Of trains, is not a train song as such, but is about a man who doesn't want to see his ex.
There are unquestionably some great songs here including plenty that I haven't mentioned, but most of the songs that people remember Tomt T Hall for camwe later.
The quality and subject matter of the recordings herein are without equal. Amazon likewise do a sterling job of giving customers fast delivery along side reasonable prices. Well done everyone.
