“Goodnight, movie girlfriend.”
The film opens with a scene that is so self-aware that of course this is directed by the Duplass brothers. Four friends attend an underground film festival to watch a new film which is made by someone that they know. The filmmaker explains that he made the film with an extremely low budget, a very rough screenplay and that it was dependant on improvisation. This scene is an obvious reflection of the “mumblecore” movement that the Duplass brothers were integral to. The four friends who are disappointed with how their acting careers have turned out are inspired by this and hit the road to an isolated cabin, where they can discuss the plans for their very own…
Jay Duplass: There's nothing scarier than a frustrated actor.
Mark Duplass: With a knife.
i pray to god greta gerwig is asked about this at some point during oscar szn
This underrated movie displays dark comedy and horror/suspense. This is like an anti-Blair Witch Project.
Está bueno el concepto pero quedó muy chafa, no pasa nada en toda la película y eso que dura poquito.
Al menos me entretuvo ver lo mal que actúa Greta Gerwig y por alguna razón está grabada cómo un capítulo de The Office
This is, apparently, an example of Mumblecore. A low budget, indie, prank, slash horror which is okay, I suppose, but more for those who like filmmaking rather than those who like watching films.
Watched on MUBI.

Week 6: Mumblegore Week
What we got here is what's known in the business as a sub-genre, a more specific type of film within a specified genre. Here, we can see the horror spinoff of the Mumblecore genre: films characterized by low budgets and a focus on naturalistic acting and dialogue over plot, now stained with fake blood and jump scares.

The Duplass brothers present a kind of a cabin in the woods horror film, but it's not quite horror and has a very low level of thrills. It's more an entertaining relationship drama about four friends who are inspired by an indie director at a film festival who made a great film for under…
The follow-up to the Duplass brothers' award-winning debut feature The Puffy Chair moves them from mumblecore to mumblegore. Four wannabe actors go to a cabin in the woods to come up with the concept for an independent film that can help them break through in cinema. The theme they develop involves a serial killer who wears a bag on his head, but then reality starts imitating art and things get scary.
I've got to hand it to the brothers for having some fun with a formulaic horror situation. It almost works. Unfortunately, I didn't really buy into the characters. Each of them is flawed, and they don't seem to grow out of their problems in the course of the story. Also, the "twist" was much too easy to guess. This is probably my least favorite mumblecore title of the six I've seen so far.
took me 10mins in to realize i got scammed and wasnt watching the right “Baghead” the 2023s version but i didnt regret watching this one til finish. at least, theres Greta Gerwig in this one also it was fun-thriller, amusing, bcause most of the scripts cracking me up for real. lowkey comedy i love dumb characters doin dumb shits in thriller movies sometimes, yknow this was just one of the examples
+ ok good to know Mark Duplass the main character guy from “Creep” actually directed this maybe y’all too should check this out put it in your watchlist if you still havent yet
This was awesome!
It has that pure passion for filmmaking the duplass always have in their films. It kept me invested , it had interesting charecters , had soo much heart. Greta gerwig was really fun to watch.
