- Edited one year agoThis is a collection of Freddie Hubbard pieces, circa 1971. Not only does Freddie play great, he is surrounded by some of the best sidemen of his day. Carter, Benson, DeJohnette, Hancock, Jarrett, Moriera, and more, the list reads like a jazz all-star game.
"Red Clay" and "First Light" are the highlights here. These extended jams really let these gentlemen explore the space. Joe Henderson too, wow. DeJonette jumps in on piano for the next track, "In A Mist", a Beiderbecke piece, yes Bix.
Hubbard blows a few more clams than usual, but this is adventurous music and calls for some exploration at times. No big deal. And no sooner than I mention that, his technical playing on "First Light is spot on, clean and chopsy. His tone is very full, just beautiful. And George Benson's solo on "First Light" is tremendous.
Clean recording, it sounds like they recorded it all in one room with a live feel.
Pressing is very nice. 4 stars. Recommended.
