The waterfall at Bad Urach has its own railway station. From there it is a very pleasant walk along the valley to the spectacular waterfall. We went on Boxing Day and a fair number of people had a similar idea but it was not crowded. We had a better view thatn we might have done in the summer as the trees are mainly deciduous. There had been quite a lot of rain recently so there was a lot of water in the river which added to the view. We could have walked up the path at the side of the waterfall which would have made for a more strenuous visit.

It’s not real busy, which I loved, but it’s a pretty significant hike - 45 minutes or so up a relatively steep mountain… but the trail is nice. I’m not a huge hiker, but the ruins at the top were soooo fun. You could just walk around and imagine. I went with my 16-year-old son and it was perhaps our favorite part of our 2-week adventure through Europe.

We were staying only 20 minutes drive from Bad Urach but never realised how pretty it was until we went there and had a look around. The old town is very picturesque. There's a not a lot to keep you in town apart from having a walk around and admiring the architecture, but if you're nearby it's worth a look.

The waterfall is easy to reach. The parking lot is at the end of the town, at the train stop. It is about 2 kilometers on foot from the parking lot. It is easy and comfortable in the Maisental up to the foot of the waterfall.
You can climb up at the waterfall. Above there is a rest area with drinks and food ... and a great view in the forest.
The water output of the spring varies depending on the weather and season from around 70 l / s in midsummer, up to 420 l / s after heavy rains or during the snow melt.

Nearby is the castle ruin, which is still accessible and offers a great view of the surroundings

Schiller cave is accessible from the top of the Mountain (aprox 650 meters) by parking in the village of Wittlingen and walking through the woods along a well signposted route, or from a car park at the bottom of the mountain and walking through the woods and through the 'Wolf Gorge' upwards towards the top of the mountain. Either route will take you through some lovely woodland landscape and the Gorge itself is also particularly stunning. When you get to the cave, be careful where you walk around the edge of the path, it's a particularly long drop downwards if you loose your footing! Ideally you'll need a helmet (or at the very least a hat or cap to protect your head) and a head torch, good sturdy shooes (as the path inside can be slippy and wet) and a long sleeve jumper or jacket as the caves around here are about 8 degrees in temperature. And off you go and explore! You really can't go wrong in this cave, its ideal for beginners and kids and just make sure you leave everthing as you found it, don't use naked flames in the cave and be respectful of other cave inhabitants - human and batlike! Oh, and make sure you visit between mid April and the end of October as the cave will be closed at other times because of our furry bat-friends. If you go right down to the 'bottom' of the cave please be careful, there is a lot of lime sludge (up to 20cm) which tends to suck visitors in and you might end up looseing a shoe! Also prepared to get a bit dirty and muddy, as I said, a great cave for children! Top off the trip with a little hike up to the castle ruins for a spectacular view of the valley below and maybe take along some BBQ stuff for a stop at one of the grill and picnic places along the way.

Very well preserved historical city center. Great for a cup of coffee, or a bakery treat. A few shops to visit. Try Schwenk Mode, the sales lady there was very helpful
