That sound? That flavor? That certain je ne sais quoi that lets you known you’re in “Nawlins” and nowhere else? It’s all good and in broad abundance on the streets of Tremé, where so much of what’s considered to be the very best of New Orleans culture and tradition is, put simply, just how people go about their daily lives in this historic part of town. As one of America’s oldest African-American neighborhoods and among the nation’s first established residential areas for free people of color, Tremé’s significant heritage and contribution cannot be understated. This is especially the case when considering some of Tremé’s most famous residents, most notably jazz great Louis Armstrong. For full flavored food, funky and jazzed up music, and vibrant street life presented with homegrown pride, you can’t beat a visit to Tremé.

This having been my first time in New Orleans, one of my first things to visit was this museum. I enjoyed every minute I was there and didn't want to leave. All the history and the stories were so fascinating, I could have spent the entire day just hanging out. Chief was very proud of his history and culture and every time he spoke to the group; you could literally feel his excitement in wanting to share everything he knew about the culture and how descriptive he was, when explaining to us how each suit was made. His passion for the culture was so intense, I was mesmerized in wanting to hear more and more. This will definitely be on my list of places to visit again as he stated that they change out the suits quite frequently, so it will be another new experience the next time I visit. I love hearing about the Native American and African culture as I too come from a similar background, where my ancestors come from the Midwest specifically White Cloud Kansas. I literally felt like I was home! Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us!

    A fascinating and moving experience
It is important to note that the address of this museum has changed--it is now located at 1531 St. Philip St., at the corner of North Robertson, still in Treme. This museum is a labor of love by the late Sylvester Francis, who singlehandedly acted to record and preserve aspects of New Orleans culture that he feared were in danger of being lost. Now curated and run by his daughter, the current location remains faithful to his vision. The modestly sized single room is literally stuffed with spectacular handmade Mardi Gras costumes, photograph albums of past participants in Mardi Gras celebration (many now deceased) taken by Francis, video footage of Francis talking about his work, and other documentation and memorabilia such as videos, masks, and newspaper clippings. His daughter, who now runs the museum, was there the day we visited and explained to us that the collection will be rotated at Intervals to display more of the items. Being there and listening to her speak about her father's work was a fascinating and moving experience. As small and unspectacular as this place appears from the outside, it provides a glimpse into New Orleans life and culture that can't be had anywhere else.

Important Cultural Exhibit - Highly Recommend!
Very interesting and informative presentation by Chief Jeremy. The museum looked small from the outside but it was packed with information and Jeremy explained the symbolism, history, and artistry of the incredible suits in a first hand way. The most fascinating place we have been to on our trip to New Orleans. Highly recommend!

My husband and I happened into this lovely museum and learned far more about New Orleans history and culture than any formal book or tour could have provided us. The exhibits are detailed, gorgeous, lush and informative. The tour guide was engaged while giving us the space to explore. Definitely a 'must-see' for anyone interested in New Orleans history and peoples.

Entrance times are a bit hit or miss but I was fortunate enough to get there just as another couple were leaving. The collection of Indian suits is amazing. Robert provided a wealth of detail on the different themes for each suit and how they are constructed. It was great to learn about the social clubs & second lines as well. The museum is small (just a couple of rooms) but packed with artifacts.

This is a small museum, basically one large room. The costumes are amazing to see. The staff is very knowledgeable about the costumes, how they are made. They explained the history and traditions which really helped someone like me who has no background in Mardi Gras or New Orleans customs. They answered my questions very well I learned about the colors, second line, funerals, tribes, etc. There are also two tablets set up with pictures, and information. Worth going to see.

I thoroughly enjoyed this museum. When I first entered the museum I thought, boy this is not very big, but I quickly learned that there is a lot of history packed in it. We were provided with an informative historical background by Juston before our visit which allowed us to better appreciate its contents. We took the time to read and view everything. I would reccomend this museum

The costumes on display are over the top AMAZING! Dominique answered all my questions about the costumes and their history. The second half of the museum gave me more understand of the first line and second line parades. I was encouraged to join in the second line parade experience and I am so happy I did. I dance and enjoy the whole parade route!

We emailed to set up an appointment for a tour, but it wasn’t confirmed. We figured let just go and see what happens. It’s off the beaten path of the French Quarter, but a quick 10 min walk. We were happily accepted and given an informative tour of the history of Mardi Gras & second lines. I really appreciated the authentic experience & friendliness of Joseph. It’s a hidden gem.

My friends and I arrived at the Backstreet Cultural Museum the day after Mardi Gras. The owner Mr. Sylvester was an amazing host. He is extremely informed on any and all Backstreet New Orleans information you may want to know. He also told us about a wonderful celebration that goes on following the Mardi Gras parades. Many of the Indian Chiefs head to the Museum to continue the celebration. Everyone was extremely friendly and Mr. Sylvester Jr. even took us around the corner to St. Augustine's church where we were able to see the Tomb of the Unknown Slave. The African American History Museuem and Louis Armstrong Park are nearby. Check out Congo Square the only place Africans were allowed to play their drums during slavery. Overall this museum is small but holds a wealth of information. The cost is a suggested $8 but this museum runs on donations so my friends and I donated $10. It is worth every penny and I suggest people of all ages come and see the lesser known parts of Mardi Gras as well as Jazz Funeral and Social Club exhibits.

I attempted to purchase tickets for a class that was planning coming to visit the museum. The owner yelled at me for using PayPal and swore he would not honor the tickets that I purchased. He then hung up on me. 3 times. He called me back to tell me that he had disabled the PayPal link and told me he did not care if anyone ever came to his museum. Then he hung up on me again and took the phone off the hook so I was unable to call back. I was stunned.

I can't imagine in a city of such amazing venues someone acting so completely horrible to a stranger that is trying to bring an experience to new students. I know that some people do not like to deal with the hassle of credit cards and that is fine too. But if you already have it linked to your website, that is not the unsuspecting person who purchased the tickets fault. To be honest, we would have made it work, but his attitude and actions towards me were unforgivable. I was just calling to get information and it turned into this. If you don't want to be around people, don't run a business. The owner is a horrible human being and I don't care to ever visit such a place.

The museum is located one block outside of the French Quarter and well worth the visit. While the museum doesn't have the glossy brochures and "touristy" trappings,it is where you will find the real New Orleans. The curator has captured the spirit of Mardi Gras and the rich African-American heritage and history in three small rooms. The admission is small in comparison to the knowledge you will receive. The outfits and exhibits are not to be missed by any visitor who claims to love the city. Mr Sylvester has made available to the public a rare treasure trove. This is one group that has kept the faith and not fallen to commercialism. Well worth the visit. Take your camera and your good manners.

We found this place completely by accident while looking for New Orleans museums we had not visited and decided to give it a shot. It was, hands down, the best thing we did this last trip. It's not some big fancy museum by any stretch. It's just in a converted old house in a regular neighborhood, but it is clearly a labor of love for the people who run it. One long room houses several Mardi Gras Indian costumes, the other deals more with the neighborhood social aid and pleasure clubs & jazz funerals. I could not recommend this more highly.
