Opinions on Backless?

Its honestly my favorite album of his but it seems to be really overlooked when talking about Clapton's albums. What do you think about it and why do you think it's so underrated?

I remember reading or listening to an interview he gave about that period in his life and he said he got really into the music of Don Williams. You can hear that laid back style on “Promises” especially, but hints of it throughout. This was also Clapton’s post-heroin period where alcohol was his drug of choice, which didn’t exactly produce the most exciting music for the masses besides Slowhand a year earlier. He was releasing a ton of music, nearly an album a year, but not all of it would be hugely popular.

I think it's a little more than okay, because most of Clapton's albums are just that, okay. It's safe, predictable but also not bad in any way.

“Spineless” is the obvious jibe but it is a very dull album, mellow to the point of being somnambulant.

His post Layla 70s studio output was generally light on lead guitar work and this might be the apex of that. The faux country style never sat that well I thought. The original 70s vinyl cover design is nice though

Promises and Tulsa Time are both enjoyable. I love EC’s slide playing.

I know he didn’t write it, but I can’t listen to Early in the Morning - the lyrics are so cringe. All about seducing an 18 year old girl 🤮
